Mayor Daley's Definition of "Voluntary"

2008_09_drunk_boozer.jpg

Following up on yesterday's story regarding the city asking bars and restaurants around Wrigley Field to voluntarily honor a ban on alcohol sales after the seventh-inning stretch during post-season "clinch" games (definition for some readers/"Cubs Fans": "a game in which the Cubs can end a series with a win, facilitating their continued participation in the postseason"). How do you think Mayor Daley reacted to the protests of business owners who said that the proposed ban lacked common sense? Rationally?

HAH! 'Course not. He reacted like Mayor Daley. From the Sun-Times:

"Then I’ll have someone buy their place tomorrow. It’s not gonna cost ’em any business. They made enough money all year. I’m sorry. We’re just talking about common sense. That’s all this is. Because I’ll tell you one thing — if that community sees something they don’t like, they will not have a bar. They will not have a liquor license. They will vote it completely dry."

44th Ward Alderman Tom "Sticky Buns" Tunney hasn't signed on to the proposal. As the owner of Ann Sather's, Tunney has the unique perspective of understanding both sides of the argument and is hoping that, once business owners make their case in a neighborhood meeting Monday, a reasonable resolution can be reached.

Maybe Tunney can start by opening a dictionary for the Mayor and showing him the definition of the word "voluntary." [Sun-Times]

Who is "the community" here?

Are wrigleyvillains asking for this? Seems to be a top down "request".

Voting Wrigleyville dry? Oh I think Mayor Maynot has finally found an issue that could get him voted out of office, tarred, feathered, lustrated and aspurged.

Tom "Sticky Buns" Tunney

That's awesome....and not only because he owns ann sathers.

right. wrigleyville's going to go dry.

and again, since i was the one who wondered what a clinch game is/was, i know what a clinch game is ... it's just that you *keep* having clinch games if they don't pull it off that night, so you have to go to the next night ... etc.

and as i proffered in an earlier post ... what about cubs/sox games? i mean, talk about drunken craziness. why not do it for that series as well?

this whole thing is beyond ridiculous.

If only Daley would tell his cronies they've made enough money.

I'm sure I'm stating the obvious, but Daley's statement makes about as much sense as this ban. Who the hell is he talking about with "that community?"

And "common sense?" Ummm.....because asking drunk people to stop drinking and business to stop making money is clearly common sense? Don't get me wrong I understand the frustration with Wriglyville idiots. But this is really the best, most "common sense," answer they could come up with?

And I totally agree Prescott.

Smussy, you're thinking about unintended consequences, long-range impact and the potential for abuse.

At this rate you will never get a job in government.

Good thing Tunney doesn't own a nursery, or he'd be referred to as "dirty knees". Or if owned a banana cart...

"If only Daley would tell his cronies they've made enough money".

Well put, sir.

I'm a Cubs fan and I like to drink.. but this is a good idea! That neighborhood will be insane as it is..and really folks, what's a few more beers, especially when most of those out will already have been over-served. It is a safety issue.

That's short-sighted. Who is going to enforce this? Ever worked as a waiter or bartender or barback? Cutting people off is never a fun thing. Cutting them off in the middle of huge event? That's taking your life in your hands.

Are you going to have cops in all the bars with eyes on the tvs? A siren? People will leave the bars, all the servers will get stiffed, fights will break out and there will be blood.

The cops do a decent job containing it to the Wrigleyville pen, a thankless horrible job it is. Don't maker barstaff responsible for enforcing capricious and vague "voluntary" measures.

Bars in Wrigleyville are open until 2 am and 4 am.

For a prime time game, the 7th inning stretch is around 9:30ish...maybe 10ish.

So, the mayor is asking these business owners to stop selling their goods 4-6 hours before they normally stop selling their goods?

What a dick!

how is cutting people off for an hour a good idea? why not call for bars to close an hour earlier on "clinch nights"? Also are these only for games in which the Cubs are at home with the potential to clinch a playoff series?

Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb.

1st - 7th innings: Rage in bar.
7th - 9th innings: Rage in streets.
Post game: Return to bar. Rage.

What would they rather have come the end of that clinching game, drunk people in the bars celebrating, or drunk people in the streets celebrating?

Recipe for disaster.

If I were an owner of a bar in Wrigleyville I would be upset. Being that the owners bought the bars, (probably for a good amount of money at the time they purchased it) I think they have the right to think they are entitled to stay open to regular operating hours. Does Mayor Daley really think the owners didn't think about the idea of extra revenue because of the playoffs when thinking about the location of their bar?

"They made enough money all year" What logic of a statement is that? If that were the case, the owners would shut down and go down to Florida, till winter was over. (or at least till New Year's Eve) I understand the problem the city is trying to avoid, but this seems to be one of the least thought-out solutions that the city has come up with. Unfortunately, faced with a budget crisis, they don't have a whole lot of alternative plans.

Chuck is this a comment on the Ald. personel life

What part of Daley is king don't you people understand. Be careful or he will come knock down your bars in the middle of the night and claim it was for safety.

"Madrid in 2016"

I'd prefer Rio. Games in Madrid would mean no live events in US prime time. This "voluntary" alcohol sales-out does tie in with the Olympics as Daley wants the world to believe he's a law and order man who can handle big events. If bars follow it people will simply triple or quadruple their orders right before sales cease.

Daley knows bars won't cut off sales out of the goodness of their hearts. He's counting on bars fearing an army of inspectors descending upon the noncompliant, issuing trumped up code violations.

Dumb, if you're a Wrigleyville business owner, you want people there spending money. And if you're a Wrigleyville resident, you knew what you were getting yourself into. Unless you've been living in your graystone on Sheffield for 95 years, you shouldn't be surprised that people are pissing on your lawn.

Daley's action may actually incite some trouble. If there is one thing you should not do, try to calm down fans. Restricting booze in bars is only going to create some BS that the police will not be able to handle.

Want my two cents? http://markinchicago.typepad.com/cuban_and_the_cubs/2008/09/mayor-daley-afr.html
