Morning Box Score: Sox Lose Again
The White Sox had their ace on the mound Wednesday night, but it made no difference as the Sox dropped another game to the Minnesota Twins 3-2. The South Siders now cling to the absolute slimmest of margins -- a 1/2 game lead for the AL Central title.
While the Sox got the pitching performance they needed form Mark Buehrle to keep the game within reach, the Sox lineup was unable to produce much run production yet again. A blown call on a Buehrle pick-off also didn't help, either. While Key Griffey Jr. homered for the second consecutive night, the team went just 1-6 with runners in scoring position. Moved up to the leadoff spot, Dewayne Wise left five men on base, including a bases loaded strikeout in the second inning, and fouled out in the fourth with runners on the corners. Will Ozzie's lineup changes get an encore performance Thursday night?
Now we can only hope that the Sox, with Gavin Floyd on the mound, can salvage the final game of the series. Heading into the final weekend of the season, the last place we want to see the White Sox is in second place.

I have to say, Hawk Harrelson cries and pisses and moans more than any announcer I've ever heard in any sport. As though the Sox have never been the beneficiary of a blown call.

On the one hand I love a homer announcer, which I guess is why I liked Jack Brickhouse and Harry Carey, particularly when he was broadcasting for the Sox. That being said, yeah, Hawk has to admit that sometimes we (the Sox) get the benefit of bad calls as well. But I like the fact that if the team is sucking he'll say it and not try to gloss over it.

He is an unabashed homer, slaphappy, which is why I prefer to listen to Farmer and Stone call Sox games. It's also a reflection of how he dominates the broadcast partnership with Darrin Jackson, who seemingly allows Harrelson to roll over him at will.
The best and most objective I've heard Harrelson was when he and Stone partnered up for three games last year when DJ went to watch his daughter be born in Arizona. Hawk didn't sound so much liek a homer and just called the game, riffing with Stone the entire way. That tandem being in place for '09 just might rejuvenate Harrelson.

Yes, I am very much looking forward to Stone joining Harrelson in the booth next season. I've never cared for DJ. I don't mind a homer announcer as long as they keep it in check... too often Hawk doesn't.

Is Stoney replacing DJ a done deal or speculation? I'm sure you saw all the "Bring Back Stoney" signs at Wrigley Field the year after he left -- he's great, possibly the best out there.

Slaphappy: It is a done deal. The Sox offered DJ the radio analyst job, but there was no indication he was taking it.
Ideally I'd love to just have the two broadcast teams teams switch (Farmer and Stone have developed some good chemistry, for two know-it-alls). But Stone's analysis of a ballgame can carry a mute to a respectable job doing play-by-play. I'm pretty confident that he can keep Hawk's more base homer impulses in check, giving Kasper and Brenly a run for their money as the best baseball announce team in the city.

As far as Stone replacing DJ, i predicted it the second I heard Stone and Hawk on the air. I was just wondering how they were going to pull it off. Then Stone got the radio job and I knew it was a matter of time.
DJ should have never taken those days off to see his daughter born. He got Wally Pipp-ed.
