Beanie Baby Chief A-Spires To The Top

spire_sm_tag.jpgTy Warner, the man in charge of the Beanie Baby empire, has bought the two-story, 10,000 square foot penthouse that will sit atop the Chicago Spire, giving him a 360-degree view of the city; it will be the highest residential unit IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD. While the asking was price was $40 million, it's not immediately known what Warner shelled out for his new digs. That's a hell of a lot of storage space for those damn toys. We wonder if he'll spend his time sitting on his deck, tossing random beanie babies off the side at unsuspecting pedestrians below. As for the Spire itself, more than 30 percent of the units have been sold and is still on schedule to be completed in 2012.

are beanie babies even that popular still? HOW IS HE GOING TO AFFORD A 360 DEGREE VIEW!?

$20 says this thing never gets built. We should start a pool for the date of it's cancellation announcement.

In today's economy, an entirely condo project of this size and nature is the height of foolishness.

foz,

Nope. Beanie Babies are not popular anymore...this guy had his idea, made gajillions and what's left are tons of beanie babies at garage sales now.

I find this kind of amusing because people were buying them back in the day because they thought they'd become valuable in the future. Well...I just bought a box of beanie babies at a garage sale for volunteer work that I do, a box of FIFTY brand new, tags still on them, like they've never been touched....for $12.

Twelve dollars. Fifty of them. That's not much of a return on your investment.

The new thing now with kids is Webkins.

I think the developer is waiting for the 2016 Olympic city to be announced. If Chicago is the winner the international appeal would be greatly increased for the project. I'm skeptical that the project will end up exactly as it has been proposed, but something will go up on that site. Does anyone know if this doctor has been hired by the developer.

On the beanie baby craziness a friend of mine in high school had a mother who was obsessed with the things. When McDonald's had a happy meal that included a mini beanie baby she would go and buy a dozens happy meals just for the toy. She couldn't just throw the food away so she put the hamburgers in the freezer. There were about a hundred frozen hamburgers in the freezer. Every time we would be over she would ask if we wanted a hamburger. I made the mistake of saying yes once. That was one really gross lunch.
