In Quotes: NLDS Game One

In response to the Cubs 7-2 loss in Game One:

"You've got to concentrate. You've got to swing at strikes. You've got to be patient, take walks and you have to put pressure on the pitcher. We didn't do that tonight, and it showed." - Jim Edmonds [MLB]

"We didn't play our best game. We really didn't give ourselves any opportunities to put some runs on the board." - Derek Lee [MLB]

"I think the law of averages says we're going to get going at some point. Everybody just has to stay positive and upbeat. It's just one game." - Ryan Theriot [MLB]

"Players don't think about that, they really don't. It's stuff that's written about and talked about, but we play for the moment. We're not worried about 100 years. We'd love to be able to give Chicago fans the championship. Not only for the guys in the clubhouse but for everyone who follows this team and is a die-hard for this team. We can't worry about that [other] stuff." - Mark DeRosa [Trib]

"Let's hope we get better. We need to swing the bats, no question.'' - Lou Piniella [S-T]

"This might not be the end of the world, but Cubs fans can see it from here. The Cubs spent six months working and hitting and pitching and fielding and sweating to get home-field advantage in the playoffs, and they gave it away in five innings." - Steve Rosenbloom

"It struck the chilled Cub Nation, as it struck this observer, as the innings frittered away and nothing good happened for the home team, that the Dodgers are a very good club." - Rick Telander

"What did you expect? They are just Cubs being Cubs." - Mike Downey

"Six months of rolling to the best record in the NL and putting together the best-looking postseason Cubs roster in three generations suddenly lands on the broad and cranky shoulders of the mercurial Carlos Zambrano." - Gordon Wittenmyer

it would also be nice if the execs, business partners and casual fans from the burbs would make some fucking noise during the game. STARTING WITH THE FIRST INNING!!! (I know, it was all your first times at Wrigley...)

I agree with you Joe.

It was painful to hear the commentators talk about the greater enthusiasm of US cellular's fans compared to wrigley's fans. And I don't buy the anxiousness = quietness argument.

When the Cubs ran out onto the field at the beginning to be greeted by polite applause, as if it were late April, I was stunned, jaw on the floor. WTF?

As a Detroit Tigers fan, when the Tigers made the playoffs in 2006, the home games against the A's and Yankees in particular...the atmosphere was CRAZY. And it had only been 22 years for the Tigers.

I was quite a bit disappointed in Cubdom at that point.

thanks for collecting these quotes. It would make for a neat feature to do this for every playoff game.

artdude - thanks, that's the plan
