One Great Sandwich: Hackney's "Inside Out" Burger

2008_10_01_OGS.jpg

One of the guidelines we set when we hashed out the idea for "OGS" was "no burgers." We break that today because, while at Hackney's South Loop last weekend we had such an amazing burger it could not go unnoticed.

Staring you in the face is the "inside out" burger ($7.95). It looks fairly standard, but stuffed inside that half-pound of fresh ground beef is cheddar cheese and bacon (BACON!). Cut into the patty with a knife or fork and the cheddar flows lava from Pompeii. Not surprisingly, this burger will also preserve our arteries in a state of frozen decay, like the ash from Pompeii. Hackney's customers get a choice of bun or roll for their burgers; we opted for a rye bun. Served with perfectly crisped fries and an optional bowl of Hackney's amazing tortilla soup, it provided much needed fuel after walking from seminar to seminar Saturday.

I love Hackneys. I love Hackneys so much. I love Hackneys more than I love just about anything.

Hackneys.

Hackneys is easily thye best burger in the Chicagoland area and I feel it doesn't get any notice. maybe because there's only one in Chicago and it's not well-known. that locale btw has a GREAT beer selection. can't go wrong with a hackney burger, on rye, with cheddar and some onion rings. I want one now.

Yeah that looks fanatastic. I might hit up the south loop location just cause of this thread.

I wish I knew how to make a decent burger. I just can't get the recipe right. it's always too dry, not flavorful enough, too much flavor. I don't want to make a jalapeno/asiago stuffed burger, or something with bleu cheese. i just want to make a damn good burger dammit!

Mike, if you use 80/20 (80 percent lean, percent fat) you should be ok with whatever flavors. If you dimple the meat in the middle it'll cook evenly too instead of hockey pucking.

I usually just salt and pepper the outside pretty good and if I want flavor just finely minced onions and a dash of Worcestershire (that's a bitch to spell).

Also, Hackneys kicks ass and Margaret's comment cracked me up. The inside-out burger is the only thing I order there. Is their other food good?

Hackneys.

Alright you've seriously got to stop pumping up Hackney's - that's twice in as many days now....you're going to make my favorite lunch stop crowded. (the chicken pesto panini is amazing btw)

@mike_thoms

I thought I read somewhere that Guy Fieri did a profile on Hackney's on a recent pass thru Chicago, so it is getting some national exposure now.

The Palos location hold a special place in my clogged arteries

Meterologist: Back in the days when HotHouse was open and kept bouncing my paychecks I'd head to Hackney's for the lunch special: soup and a half-sammich. I love their albacore tuna with some potato Guinness soup.

And yes, their beer selection is very good. Look for an upcoming post on underrated beer bars. Next week's "BotW" will also be a Hackney's selection.

"I thought I read somewhere that Guy Fieri did a profile on Hackney's on a recent pass thru Chicago, "

Guy Fieri is the worst person in the world.

Just FYI.

^ I agree with you 100%

I prefer Bourdain when watching Food Porn

Anyone thinks that Guy Fieri is the worst person in the world has never seen Semi-Homemade With Sandra Lee.

Hackney's is pretty good, but I don't know if I'm going to be able to resist a continued rule-breaking on OGS with Kuma's High On Fire burger.

^ Yeah she is the one who uses tons of processed food shoved inside more processed junk food and pawns it off right, LOL

Yeah the original Hackney's, which is in some old woman's house in the middle of a neighborhood, was profiled on Guy Fieri's show. He's a bit of a knucklehead though. I just feel like in Chicago it doesn't get it's due respect as a great burger and a great restaurant and an institution. It was a prohibition-era speakeasy that ended up serving great food, then it became a great restaurant.

Speaking of burgers, does anyone know anything about the Cortland Garage? I just read, in the Red Eye sadly, that they have some new burger menu.

I'm going next time I'm in the city. No questions asked.

Thank you all for giving a damn about what this 39-year-old schmuck ate last weekend.
