My friend made a real interesting comparison between Chicago sports fans and Ancient Greece yesterday.

The North Side is Athens, with an emphasis on poetry, beauty, and philosophical perfection, despite never achieving it. Ex.- Wrigley Field's Ivy, hand operated scoreboards, all the songs and stories written about it, etc.

The South Side is Sparta, a culture driven by war and bloodlust (See William Ligue, Jr.) and winning at all cost (A.J. Pierzynski). Even our ugly ass ballpark kind of fits a "Spartan" theme. I also like the idea of Ozzie as Leonidas.

And just like Greece, when the Persians (The Green Bay Packers) invade, all of Greece unites to push them back until they can go back to their own petty squables.

Great pitching from the Dodgers? Perhaps. But I think it was the Cubs hitting that suffered overall. Just look at their posture and faces when at the plate. They didn't look as positive as they did during the season.

So now that "everyone has a bad century" has come and pass, is it now "everyone has a bad millenium?"

Epoch? Age?

Really, at what point do you go from pitiable whipped dog to simply a bottom looking up at their cubbie blue top?

So did the bars around Wrigley stop serving after the seventh? It was a clinching game last night. Good thing the Mayor and Aldermen spent so much time hashing out that piece of work.

I think more and more teams are starting to realize that the "super teams" of the past - which the Cubs are based off of - are starting to fade. The Red Sox are the only team that seems to consistently win, at least recently. Same with the Cardinals. 136 Mil for Soriano (the "spark")? The Cubs were good, but not when it counted, so off the the links with you. I think we may see the World Series no one is interested in: LA vs. Tampa.

and yet last year almost the same cubs team did play through that last week of the season to get into the playoffs. What the FUCK?! I'm so goddamn angry now, I have no other words to type.

Pretty unbelievable for sure. I think you nailed it regarding the way the end of the season was managed. They weren't in a race anymore, having clinched it early, and just didn't stay sharp. When you're benching your starters and messing around with the pitching rotation and not getting competitive starts out of your ace pitchers in the week and a half prior to the postseason, it shouldn't really come as much of a surprise. They literally found new ways to lose ballgames.

It's a real shame too, because there's no doubt that the Cubs we saw playing all throughout the regular season were the best team in the National League. Unfortunately, that's not the team that showed up to play against LA in the post season.

Another one for the history books.

This just in...

Cubs fans confused after series-ending loss to Dodgers. Looking for someone or something to blame, not wearing a Cubs uniform or in Cubs management.
