When I moved to the Chicago-area to go to grad school, I ended up living by the corner of Austin and Lake in Oak Park for a while. Pretty sketch area late at night.

OP resident here. Eh, not surprised about the increase in crime for Oak Park. Stuff like this always happens when the economy takes a dive. I do find some of the comments on the Trib comment page pretty ridiculous. "You liberal commies are getting what is coming to you! You're gonna be ghettofied!" Yeah, that'll happen. Taxes are ridiculous, home prices here are ridiculous, and some people are still up in arms that we got a Bar Louie because Oak Park has a history of being a dry town. That, and it's been a socialist Mayberry for over 100 years. But that said, more police would be great......otherwise I don't really mind my communist state all that much. No city of Chicago tax and I have access to the blue line so I don't have to drive in.
