I have seen this nonsense firsthand... it's easy to assume that sanitation and waste is mobbed up... no reason to believe though, that Chicago Porta Potty Companies are properly disposing of waste... if not, nail them too.

Fed: Well, that would be a great idea, though I'm sure of the taxpayer-funded bodyguards these people have would try to shoo you away :)

I wonder if we could get someone to follow the alderman and Daley around. I'm guessing they are doing nothing work related 75% of the time. Daley would be expensive to follow since he likes to leave the city for a foriegn vacation everytime there is the slightest bit of a problem.

In any other city a mayor as awful as this one would have been drop-kicked out of office years ago.

Yes, but despite Chicago's macho image, this is a city of subjects, not citizens, who apparently like being ruled by barely Irish thugs and idiots. And I guess when you give people very well-paying jobs, and then let them loaf at will, you win support that way. Add into the mix the ability of the machine over the years to control the election process, and you have years of rule.

I like how Daley is shocked and angered by this ... and he gets away with it. And now people want to privatize it. Here's an idea: MANAGE it! Daley has proven to be inept at managing anything that doesn't generate revenue. This sanitation debacle is just another item to add to the list of services that are broken yet somehow entirely separate from him. CTA, CPD, CPS, hired trucks, convicted Laski, Briatta, Sorich, McCarthy, Slattery, Sullivan, Gammicchia, Kozubowski ... Ey, whaddyagonnado? In any other city a mayor as awful as this one would have been drop-kicked out of office years ago.

dopplerd—

I agree. The money these guys make (especially when put into context with the quantity and quality of work they apparently do) is obscene. Most of us bust our asses for considerably less pay. I'm glad to see this come to light. I only hope that something is done about it.

I'm usually not a fan of privatization but, my god, I think the current system probably has been a lost cause for a while now.

I read the report (OK, I skimmed it) and the thing that really stood out for me is the salary. The garbage man makes over $28 per hour and the driver makes over $30 per hour. That includes 5 weeks of vacation per year. The 26% of time spent drinking beer and wasting time puts total paid vacation to almost 17 weeks a year!

WTF, I know lawyers that don't make that much.

I am all for Unions when it comes to protecting workers rights, but when the union protects waste and fraud it makes me pissed off. Chances are the guys that will be fired will be ones actually doing a full days work and making the tenured workers look bad. City hall will tell the Union that X number of employees need to go and the union will submit a list.

Daley is all about privatizing things. Why not the garbage men?

Are you saying that the waste management game is crooked?

My god. Maybe the city council is corrupt too!

The only city department that is on the job aggressively is the REVENUE department. Those fuckers WORK.

"No one should be sleeping, loafing, drinking, quitting early or anything else. This deals with criminal activity. This deals with cheating."

Unless they are on the official 5th floor clout list
