One Great Sandwich: Philly's Best's Monterey Chicken Grinder

2008_09_10_16_OGS.jpg
The last time we visited Philly's Best was in spring following a Sadies concert at Schubas. A fight nearly broke out between a belligerent homeless man barreling his shoulder into every drunk filing out of the bars he could find and the drunken kid in front of us claimed that, since he worked at the Sheriff's Department, he could probably shoot the guy and claim self-defense. These are the things we put up with in order for some late night noshes.

Now that Philly's Best has opened up a Greektown location (769 W. Jackson), we get to deal with a completely different brand of last call idiocy for late night eats. Lucky for us the Markellos brothers have both a sense of humor for dealing with drunks and make some of the best Philly cheese steaks and grinders in the city. A longtime favorite of ours from our days on the North side is the Monterey Chicken grinder, a molten blend of skinless chicken breast, ham, bacon, cheese and ranch dressing that's good for at least two meals (if you buy the large one for $8.99). It'll definitely absorb a fair amount of alcohol.

Try it on the garlic bread...

I don't know if I love this sandwich or hate this sandwich. On the one hand it looks like a buttery-filled, bacon-y heartclogger. But on the other hand, it looks like a buttery-filled, bacon-y heartclogger...mmmmm
