Ok, I have make a small admission here. I really don't read that often, and when I do it's by few authors. The reason why, is because of pacing. There's something about the way certain authors just drag on and on and on about something that makes me lose focus like I have ADD. I read Vowell, not only because history is cool - but, because her style of writing and pacing is phenomenal. I can hardly wait to read that next word, rather than harken back to an earlier part of the day when I may or may not have remembered to lock my car. This is why Sarah Vowell is my favorite author. Well, that and she's a fellow celiac... and knows her way around a cannon.

I too have a massive crush on Sarah Vowell, but I thought "Shipmates" was a little lacking this time around. Maybe its because I find that period of American History to be as dry as a saltine dipped in sand. Maybe because some of the connections between Puritan society and America under the Bush administration felt a little forced.

Sarah Vowell is my dream woman. Obscure historical obsessions, wit so dry it's kindling and a wardrode of greys and blacks. *Sigh* I finished "The Wordy Shipmates" in a sitting, brilliant stuff.
