Man, it sucks rhino penis that I missed this!!!

So that second photo reminds me of a major problem I have with the Riv. Why do they feel the need to assault the audience with the klieg lights mounted on each side of the room between the opening bands and the headliners. I swear I get a tan between sets. It’s one thing to blast these babies when the show’s over to aid with the “get tha f*ck out” routine. But in the middle of enjoying a frosty beverage waiting for a band I’m looking forward to? That’s just plain rude. They have plenty of other house lights that cast enough light for everyone to buy drinks and get safely to the facilities. No need to turn the place into a Riefenstahl set.

Awesome show, but it proved the Riv completely sucks as a venue. The only choices last night were to either fight your way to the very front of the main floor in order to actually see the stage (a spot you will never be able to reclaim if you have to go to the bathroom or get a beer), or sit in the balcony where you are never allowed to stand up. Who wants to sit through an entire TVOTR show?? This place is in dire need of a renovation where they actually raise the stage so people can get good sight lines. Hopefully if they come back this spring they just do two nigths at the metro again.

I say bullshit on sitting in the balcony at The Riv. Its a rock show, stand if you want to. I almost got in a fight last time Arcade Fire played there because I wanted to stand up during their performance.

I'd agree with the f**k it and stand policy, hotwater, but security actually threatens to bounce you if you won't take a seat. It just seems stupid to me to have that large of a seating area (where you are required to actually sit) in a venue that has quite a bit of rock and dance/electronic based shows.

The Riv security is half the problem. They allowed a ton of people to initially stand in the aisle to the left of the main floor close to the stage (we asked if it was okay to do so before the show started and the security guard posted there said it was fine, which surprised me), and then decided to bounce everyone out of the area when the show was already half over. The place is just run poorly and needs a major overhaul.

@ad -- The security is ALWAYS saying that. I went to the Nick Cave show a few weeks back and they let us stand in the aisle along the wall, too, until Nick and the Bad Seeds started... even though we asked and were assured that we could stand there the entire show.

I was there last night, too, and just ended up at the mirrored wall in the back of the first floor. Yeah, can't see a damn thing from that vantage point, but I was having some weird back problems and couldn't find any acceptable place to lean otherwise. A security guard was eying me the entire time, but other than that...

[I despise the Riv as a venue, just for the record.]

On a side note, I can't stress enough how good the show--performance wise--actually was. One of the few bands that make a big effort to change up their sound for an exciting show. The new songs sounded better to me live and stripped down a little. It was also cool to see Katrina Ford (the female back-up singer present on their past three albums) perform with them. Very tight show with a good mix of old and new. Hope they come back this spring.

TV On The Radio might be the best band together today. The show was great, the venue sucks ass with crowd control, view of the stage, awful sound and over-priced cans of beer. I am very careful of who I see at the Riv, but this band was worth it.

Whoa, someone please enlighten me. Is this no-standing-in-the-balcony rule a new thing? I've never encountered that before at the Riv. These stories I'm reading are raising my eyebrows.
