Chicago Tops NYC, LA In Murders

We're third in population, but first in murders. For the first time in 10 years, Chicago has surpassed New York City in murders (and L.A. to boot). As of Tuesday, Chicago has had 426 murders so far in 2008 compared to 417 for New York City and 302 for L.A. Just more trouble for embattled Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis who will appear before the City Council today to discuss budget issues for the CPD. Chicago is on pace to top 500 murders for the year, which is still short of the bloody 1998 when the total was around 700.

Reminds me of that song " How to survive in South Central" that Ice Cube droped back when he wasn't gay

How to survive in South Central (what you do?)
A place where bustin a cap is fundamental
No, you can't find the shit in a handbook
Take a close look, at a rap crook
Rule number one: get yourself a gun
A nine in your ass'll be fine
Keep it in your glove compartment
cause jackers (yo) they love to start shit
Now if you're white you can trust the police
but if you're black there aint nuttin but beef
Watch out for the kill
Don't make a false move and keep your hands on the steering wheel
and don't get smart
Answer all questions, and that's your first lesson
on stayin alive
In South Central, yeah, that's how you survive"

Possible new headline. "Number one with a bullet."

1992: 943 Murders

I remember that year a bit too well, it was the year I moved here from the south burbs and someone got murdered in my courtyard.

I guess if you've been here a little while you don't feel so bad about this, I mean it was closer to 800 when I first came here.

Also I just want to add that it kind of irks me that L.A.'s always listed as the second most populated city in the U.S. considering it's city limits are more than twice as large as Chicago's.

Wooo whow ! Yes Chicago's own Olympic Sport! Sponsored by Glock "for those special moments when you need to drope ah fool"

Yeah I'm confused about LA... I thought LA proper was actually really small, and then all that stuff outside of it (Santa Monica, Hollywood, etc) is not actually LA but people call it that? Is it like Santa Monica is to LA as Evanston is to Chicago (to use a little SAT logic) ?

Santa Monica is a suburb of LA, as is Beverly Hills, West Hollywood & Culver City. In fact all of them are enclave suburbs.

But Hollywood, North Hollywood, Van Nuys, Encino, Sherman Oaks, Chatsworth, Wilmington & San Pedro are all part of the City of LA.
All were annexed about 100 years ago, but for some reason retained their names, unlike all the parts of Chicago that were annexed at about the same time [Rogers Park, Lakeview, etc].

I don't know much about what neighborhoods are officially part of L.A. but according to wikipedia the city limits are in square miles:

Chicago 237
L.A. 498

Ah. Thanks for clearing that up Scooter!
