If you're looking for a good Philly cheese steak, you only go to Philly's Best. With four locations three in the city, including our new favorite in Greektown it isn't hard to find one. In Bridgeport, Ramova Grill is the little diner that can, not to mention home to the best chili in the city (we will broker no arguments to the contrary).
We love going into these places and just staring at the signage. Between the smartassed humor at Philly's Best to the classic specials menus at Ramova, there's plenty to ogle. In addition, the grill at Ramova is located right inside one of the windows, which gives a whole new meaning to "window shopping."
Here are a few of our favorite shots from recent visits to each.

Stroger Makes Hollywood Play

nah, phillys best sucks.
Never been to Philly's Best, but judging by their signs, they're a bunch of dicks. Eff them and their fattening cheese-covered heart blockers. Personally, I don't take kindly to some out-of-towner coming into my city and treating me like I'M the idiot.
Philly's Best rules. Best french fries in the whole wide world.
Those are the Philly rules as far as I can tell. I know some places in Philly will not tolerate someone trying to order and not following the rules. in Chicago I don't think they really care much, probably because they know they're in Chicago and not philly. As for the food...well I'm not a cheesesteak expert, i've had the actual sandwich in Philly a couple of times and it was good. Based on my limited experience I'd have to say that the sandwich and Philly's best tastes pretty close to the ones I had in Philly. Furthermore, I do know that the Philly's Best restaurant uses all the same ingredients they do in Philly. Same brand/cut of meat, cooked in the exact same way, same bread, same Cheeze Wiz. I'm sure a lifelong Philadelphian would be able to give a much better comparison but for me it's close enough.
mmm...Ramova Grill and Kevin's Hamburger Heaven are high on my list of things I miss about living on the Southside.
Philly's Best is a total addiction of mine - the cheese steak and onion rings will kill me, but it will be a sweet, meaty and cheesy death.
I order from the Logan Square location which is inside a car wash. I try not to think about that.
I hate to admit that I'm glad Philly's Best offers a smaller philly steak...that's just too much f'ing sandwich otherwise. but yeah, it's quality food. never had the pizza mainly b/c every time i'm there all i want is a cheesesteak.
The pizza is quite good.
Is there a Philly style of pizza or is it just new york style?
Philly's Best is fantastic. Try the Monterey Chicken.
We have tried the Monterey Chicken, Eamon.
The Combination Grinder at Philly's Best got me thru college. Perfect for pre- and post-drinking. I wish I was drinking and eating a Combination Grinder right now.
I wouldn't have a case of the Mondays if I had some Pat's or Gino's with a side of Yuengling.
I'm originally from the Philly area, and the Philly's Best signage makes me not want to eat there. They're trying waaaay to hard to live up to the perceived employee grouchiness at Geno's/Pat's. Folks from South Philly are just like people anywhere else. I can't ever remember getting bitched at for ordering a steak incorrectly or asking where the toilets are.
Does it feel like I could be back home? Not at all. Is the food good, though? Sure. They do use the same ingredients, but something about their cheese steaks feels off... probably the rolls, or the lack of grease. It's still good, just different.
I'll admit I order Philly's Best once in a while, but it's a joke. Their menu talks about getting their steaks from "Philadelphia cows" (whatever that means), when they should be worrying about getting Philadelphia rolls. And I don't know where they call chicken cheesesteaks "chicko steaks", but it's not Philly.
And you should only be going to Pat's or Geno's if your usual place is closed, but if you find yourself there no one really gives a shit if you don't do the "wiz wit" thing, as long as you don't order Swiss (John Kerry). But if it's Geno's, make sure you speak English...

Yeah, I'm sure the food is as good as some of the folks here say, but I don't need my sandwich with a side order of douchebag.
I'd be just as offended if I visited another city and found a "genuine" Chicago hot dog joint with a bunch of "dem, dese and doze" signs and a guy pretending to be an El Rukn behind the counter.
just reading this makes me hunger for a pit sandwich hold the veggies but extra horseradish.
p.s nice El Rukin touch there Stealth, course I think I'm the only one that caught it. It would be nice if he were wearing the original pittsburgh pirate base ball cap.
Spook, you always think you are the only one who gets it. "I am not worthy."
The Ramova Grill will be featured on Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations episode that he filmed in Chicago a couple of months ago! exciting..ramova was also rated best chili in chicago by some metromix survey last year. seriously though. the chili is amazing and the breakfast there is also really really good.
