Good grief, people. After this week's hanging of a Sarah Palin effigy in West Hollywood comes word that an effigy of Barack Obama was found this morning on the campus of the University of Kentucky. The Secret Service claimed the Palin effigy was okay because it was part of a Halloween decoration. Um, no. An effigy is defined as "a crude figure representing a hated person." So it's kind of not okay. As for the Obama effigy, U of K President Lee Todd said he was, "personally offended and deeply embarrassed by this disgusting episode." There was also an effigy of Obama found on the campus of Oregon school George Fox University in September.

So it's kind of not okay.
Well, it was alright for those patriots who revolted against the British. And many other Americans throughout history. Effigies are due for a comeback.
Shouldn't they have at least tried to get Palin's hair right? Or put glasses on it? Or done anything that would even remotely identify it as Sarah Palin and not, say, Helena Bonham Carter?
^ It does have glasses, and the hairstyle isn't quite spot on, but you can get the idea. These posted pics don't do it justice.
The only clearer image I could find, is in reviewing the story on the LA Times Page;

This really did cross the line, but for those deeming this as a threat, or illegal need to calm down.
I can't believe anybody feels threatened enough by Governor Avon Lady to hang her in effigy. Her idiotic, high-energy hatefulness has made Grandpa's campaign quite entertaining.
There is a distinction between the "Palin effigy" case and the other cases mentioned.
In the Palin effigy case, we know who hung the effigy. The homeowner freely admits it.
In the case of the Obama effigies in Kentucky and Oregon, we simply do not know who hung them. They could just as easily have been hung by Obama supporters. Recent experience with hoaxes makes that clear.
Just keep your bullsh*t detectors set on HIGH when you have hate crimes by anonymous or unseen assailants reported.
They could just as easily have been hung by Obama supporters. Recent experience with hoaxes makes that clear.
Like what? Out of curiousity.
Only recent political hoax that I know of is the McCain campaign worker who said she was mugged and beaten by a huge black (natch) Obama supporter. You know, the one who scratched a "B" on her own face..

yeah, we kinda do know who did the one in Oregon.
Obama effigy
They people who hung the effigy made reference to some sort of affirmative action program, which leads me to believe they were serious. If it was a hoax and they just wanted to rile people up, just hanging the effigy would have done it. Furthermore, if it were a hoax they probably would have gone to great lengths to show it was a hoax and ease any fears of violent racists on campus. They could have just as easily said the case of old "B"-Face Girl was solved and left it at that, but since it was a hoax...
By discussing the Oregon case, you inadvertently make my point.
As demonstrated in the link that you provided, we still have not been told who hung the effigy in Oregon. We also have not been told the motives of the persons who hung the effigy.
Why has the camus administration refused to even mention the MOTIVES of the persons who hung the effigy? That would have informed the campus community. Yet the administration refused to release information about the motives of the effigy-hangers, in addition to refusing to release their identities. That raises the hoax-suspicion-quotient even higher.
We don't know which side of the affirmative action debate in Oregon hung that effigy. Was it a hoax by the pro-affirmative action side? We still do not know. As I mentioned, you have only strengthened my point. Please, stay skeptical when you these "hate crimes" appear
Whether it's Obama or Palin, it is a completely disgusting act.
I had never thought of this before, but Matilda has a point...effigies ARE due for a comeback.
Ward?
Is violence against women only a liberal thang? Wake up.
Ward-
Administrators often don't release information about crimes either to protect people (guilty or innocent) or to protect information that is considered evidence, or that is otherwise "sensitive" material.
A lack of information disclosure DOES NOT necessarily mean something is a hoax.
As I mentioned, you have only strengthened my point.
To you.
Please, stay skeptical when you these "hate crimes" appear
As should you. Not everything unexplained is a "hoax". And no one ever called it a "hate crime" but you.
Thank for keeping an open mind.
you too
