Unfortunately Scooter is sort of right about JJ Jr.
Nothing against JJ Jr, but I don't think he can win a statewide election.

I think Blago and the Dems would be better served at choosing a younger moderate, someone who has potential down the road to win another statewide election.

Why allow the local Republicans a chance to steal a senate seat with an untested and unfunded primary battle?

@Laura:

Do you mean Peter Fitzgerald or Patrick?

Not one of those mentioned: Jackson Jr., Schakowsky or Duckworth could win a statewide election in 2010 for senator.
Appointing Jackson Jr. would just piss off all of downstate by making them think that the senate position is reserved for blacks, which will get them to vote for the white Republican, whoever that turns out to be.
Schakowsky is way too liberal to win, period!
Duckworth couldn't even win a House seat two years ago, let alone a statewide election.
If he sent Lisa Madigan to the Senate, he's giving her a huge platform to challenge him & a way to get more publicity to attack him.
If that crook Blago thinks he would be insulating himself against the coming indictment, he's really deluding himself.
The best bet is a caretaker who won't run in two years, an older Democrat that has no interest in staying in DC.
My choice would be Adlai Stevenson III, he's 78 & has the experience & would never run in 2010 for a full term.
Let everyone else fight it out in the primary that year.

@aaronsinger That is why I have a hard time with Rahm on the short list. He's pretty powerful where he is. Why give that up?

I wouldn't mind Tammy Duckworth either but I feel like her name got dropped as a potential when it came out that she had used a state van for business that didn't relate to the state. (With her special needs, I can understand why that mistake might have been made and can forgive her for it.)

My dream replacement would probably be Peter Fitzgerald. (If he had run, I don't think we'd have a potential President Obama.) I just can't see Rod screwing his part that way. :(

Just a question of what Governor Rod will be thinking when he makes that decision:
* Who can I best get rid of in order to help myself?
* Who can I best suck up and appoint in order to help myself?
* Who can I appoint who will help me stay out of * jail?
Who can I appoint who will give me the most money for my campaign for re-election?

McCain should finance some Jesse Jackson Jr. for senate commercials. It might carry Illinois for him!

@ LauraH:

Those two wouldn't be bad, either. Latest speculation I've seen is on Jackson, Emanuel, Madigan, or even Rep. Jan Schakowsky, although I doubt she gives up her rather powerful House position now.

Although, since it's Blags' decision, who knows who he will pick.

p.s Hey Marc Dawg, next time use the Kung Fu photos Jr posted on his government web page to show us voters just how"bad ass" he is. I think Chuck Sudo posted them before you showed up in these parts

Wasn't the previous speculation not Rahm or Lisa but Tammy Duckworth? Or even Dan Hines? I wouldn't mind either one of those two.

Jimmy mutha F*cking crickets! what the donkey does "isn't a bad politican" mean in Illinois? Jackson is the negro version of Rahm, Lisa Madigan's got more Black in her than Pimp Jr. Heck I think I like his pimp'n daddy better. At least he stood for something 30 years ago.

I say we need a draft Pat Quinn movement. Al Frankin will need some help yall!

Junior isn't a bad politician at all. His father is a scumbag, but he has distanced himself from him. He seems the right choice to me. Much better than the alternatives of Rahm Emanuel or Lisa Madigan.

I get this is Illinois and we like to keep our politics in the family, but is the best person in the state to replace JJ Jr. really his wife? There is no one else? It has to stay in the family?

My favorite speculation so far is that the Rod will appoint himself, thinking it'll be easier to get re-elected to Obama's old seat than his current one.

I thought the same thing, but she'd be better off as governor the perhaps step in for Durbin after his next term, barring him not getting re-elected...if the planet mongo comes in alignment or something.

She's 42 and Durbin's 64.

Jackson just burns me, he's a vile little fucker and his crying jag at the DNC made me ill.

Wouldn't it be smarter to appoint Lisa Madigan? That way Governor Rod can remove one of his major competitors with high approval ratings if he plans to run for re-election.
