I just remember that it seemed he always had something to say and it was important and you better listen, but it wasn't forceful. It seemed like you could say something to him about anything, no matter how inane or random or seemingly unimportant and he'd have something important and meaningful to say about it.

I had the honor of meeting Studs back in 2000 after a journalism awards event he attended. He was sitting by himself, waiting for his car and so I approached him to say hello. We talked a few minutes about Nelson Algren before Studs had to go out to his car.

I just read the Chicagoist link on the Huffington Post with Studs and Edward Lifson. Looks like I was reading it the minute he died; I laughed out loud at his comment that Ayn Rand was an idiot. RIP http://www.huffingtonpost.com/edward-lifson/studs-for-obama_b_137278.html

Just a few days ago I noticed that my parents had set their home computer's wallpaper to a picture of Studs. I thought to myself "Man, one day he's gonna be gone. I'll miss him." And I do! Never met the guy, but dammit, he was my friend. Gonna wear red socks tomorrow.

What a giant, fulfilled, life. I met him two years ago and he was nearly deaf and couldn't really walk, but so sharp and witty still.

Since the first time I heard it, I've taken on Studs' motto as my own: "Take it easy, but take it." I'll bet there's a vigil at Bughouse Square tonight. Everyone in Chicago media owes a debt to Studs.

Just a few months ago I was looking to get a quick haircut on my lunchbreak so I went down the block to Supercuts, which was jam-packed of course. I noticed this little sub-basement barbershop down the street, the Medina Barbershop. So I decided to take a chance. The guy cutting my hair was a real old-timer. We got to chatting and it turns out he was Studs' barber! And Studs had just come in for his haircut the day before! I suppose that was his last one. I missed meeting him by only one day. He was going to read at next year's Nelson Algren birthyear centennial celebration. There'll never be another like him.
