Chicagoist: Mayor Daley Signs on Three More PR Firms

Why are Daley's approval ratings so high? I think there are a significant number of white Chicagoans who are satisfied with having a white mayor, even though they don't necessarily love Daley. The prospect of a black mayor scares them shitless. Many of those people are the same ones at cocktail parties and union halls extolling the virtues of Obama to anyone within earshot to show how enlightened they are. When Daley has one of his countless managerial fuckups these whites say "Well at least the downtown looks nice" while thinking "At least he isn't black." Daley absolutely loves Todd Stroger. While Stroger is a dolt in his own right he provides a lightening rod attracting white rage, leaving Daley relatively unscathed. Chicago's highest major city sales tax is just as much Daley's doing as Stroger's but Stroger takes the hits. Stroger tolerates the abuse so long has he has the full backing of Daley and his machine. Daley also loves Stroger because he gives blacks a seat at the power table. Without it blacks could decide to focus efforts on winning the next mayoral election.

You know I like the yellow allien helmit, I just get all Bill Bixby over Daley. and I know you, Matilda among others are critical on Daley. I just don't understand how Screwtape gets so much more love than Blago. His approval ratio is still in the 60 percentile range after all this!

That was your response to a critical post about Daley, a figure i have often criticized. That's why I had no clue what you were getting at. You're post had no baring on what I said in the post. The only thing to "make of me" sir is that of a highly literate humanist in general and at this moment, highly pissed off! Now please put your thinking cap on sir and tie it tight, then perhaps you will understand. My point is that on Chicagoist( as in so many other arenas of public civic conversation and debate) the mention of Blagojevich, a bumbling pick pocket compared to Daley,draws an pouring of toxic loathing rants. Yet the mention of that wretched modern day political Fagan on the fith floor draws but a tepid response in comparison. Just sit back and watch how many people respond to this post( and the other one about the Red Lights) as opposed to the one about Blago. Spook: I think you have been here long enough to know that many posters, myself included, are very eager to criticize Daley. Don't believe me: Go back and look at the archives. Christ. Don't come back until you've done your homework. Facts and research can be your friends if you only you will let them. And why do you carry such a boner for Blago anyway? He's done nothing but make some noise about good causes. He's had no follow-through, and has arguably damaged the causes he pretends to champion. As for this issue, PR often has an inverse relation to sound management. The more money one has the spend on professional spinners--or shall I say liar?--the less likely that person or agency or organization is doing a good job. Daley's management of this city has finally--I hope--been exposed as the expensive fucking joke it is. What seems clear now--and what seemed clear to some of us years ago-is that Daley was lucky with the real-estate boom and relatively good economy of the 1990s, which took place when affluent people were rediscovering the joys of urban living. Yeah, Daley did some smart things--he's yet to waste the Skyway cash on the general operating fund, for instance, and I give him credit for being friendly to business when he needed to, even if he did bend over for big biz far too often, and he did manage to smooth over at least some of the city's racial tensions, albeit by buying off some minority leaders-but this guy is a fucking joke. That the national press, as well as many Chicago sheep, continue to think this guy is some minor god of city management speaks loudly about general stupidity.

"When you're trying to alert millions of people to hundreds of city programs, it's understandable that you need to go beyond the current level of staffing." This is BS. There has never been a mayoral press conference that didn't bring in representatives from every TV and Newspaper outlet in the city. News about city services always gets out. Jackie et al is worried about spin control, which is what costs $50 mil. And that's on top of the salaries of the many folks in the mayor's press office, who are among the best paid employees in the whole city gov.

The mention of Blago is in comparing the response to the respective individuals improprieties. Spook is making the point that Blago's issues are decried by all loudly and without exception, while Daley is often given a free ride. In short, "What up with that istites?"
