Rockin' Our Turntable: The Statutes of Liberty

2008_11_statutes_of_liberty.jpgChicago's Statutes of Liberty are sort of a one-trick pony. They write political hard rock. That's it. No more, no less. Oh wait, there is more, and that is their hard rock is of a decidedly partisan nature. This is evident through song titles like "Hey Mr. President," "Whitey Comes In Many Colors," and "Barack And Roll." Hell, their own bio describes them as being, "50% classic rock, 50% leftist rant, and 100% FREEDOM." And you know what, that's 100% O.K. with us, dudes, we've needed that sort of mixture, especially over these last couple of months.

After tonight, hopefully their entire shtick will become irrelevant. I suspect no one would be happier about that than the Statutes of Liberty. Then they could go on to wrap their kick-ass riffage around lyrics more befitting a good time; like pickin' up chicks, tearin' shit up, and generally havin' a good time since they'd no longer have to rail against the man. Because their songs really are really catchy in that tight-pantsed 1976 sort of way we tend to describe as both "heavy" and "groovy," and while we appreciate using hooks to deliver scalding messages about how fucked up our country is at this very second, we're hoping they'll need to start adjusting their lyrics a tad starting tomorrow.

Until then, join the band tonight at they play The Empty Bottle, usher out our current broken regime, and hopefully welcome a local man into the White House. May there be groovier times ahead, indeed.

The Statutes of Liberty plays tonight at The Empty Bottle, 1035 N Western, 8 p.m, voters get in for FREE / everyone else pays $5, 21+
