World Record for Dog Marriages Set to be Broken in Oak Park

2008_11_04doggierehearsaldinner.jpgPuppy love will be in the Oak Park air this weekend as the town readies to break the world record for simultaneous dog marriages. At the "I Do, Doggone It!" mass canine wedding event going on this Saturday, pet owners hope to match more mutts than ever in holy matrimony. According to the almighty Guinness (book, not beer) the current record set in May 2007 in Littleton, Colorado stands at 178 canine weddings. In an effort to beat this number, a doggy "speed dating" event will take place first, which we imagine will include a lot of quick n' dirty butt sniffing among the dogs and plenty of giggly awkwardness among the owners. A wedding reception, photos ops and games and prizes will follow. Register here.

(Do we understand this correctly? Dog marriage, totally natural and supercute! Gay marriage, potentially ... immoral? We're confused.)

Saturday November 8, Marion St. and Westgate between Lake and North Blvd in Oak Park. Registration and Speed dating at 11 a.m., Wedding at 1 p.m., Reception to follow.

That picture's cuteness makes my head and heart want to explode.

Well, I live in OP and I'm thinking about going...only I don't know why they had to wait to do this in November, this weekend's weather forecast doesn't look hospitable.

The proceeds go to the Animal Care League, so it's a good cause and my dog loves to socialize, so if the weather is at least half way decent I think we'll go.

And yes...that pic is frikking adorable.

I support a constitutional amendment baning canine marriage, this must be done for our children, to protect the sanctity of the institution of marriage. If you don't agree with me you must be a socialist terrorist. This goes totally against God's Will.

Go McPalin! Drill baby drill.

Has anyone seen the Tom Goes To The Mayor where Tom organizes the annual Jefferton dog marriage day? It didn't turn out well. I wish Oak Park more luck.

I know this Tom Goes to the Mayor. For that, I say, Yay.

For World Record Dog Marriages, I say, a-booooooooooooo.

Okay, I'm way behind on my Chicagoist, but I do read them all ... eventually.

Have to say it again. Dog marriage is okay, but gay marriage is wrong? My head just exploded. Then again, I'm an ordained Reverend, and available to marry any of you to anyone and anything, just ask!

Me and my dog participated in this and it was actually a lot of fun. I love dogs and I loved seeing so many different breeds. From Great Danes to chihuahuas...they were all there. There were even a pair of male pugs, with their top hats on, doing their 'civil union'. There were crazy ladies with poodles all decked out...a people/dog watching extravaganza.

It would have been much better if it weren't 30 degrees outside, and I'd like to know who would plan an event like this for NOVEMBER in CHICAGO, but I digress.

To me, the whole point of the thing was that the money collected went to The Animal Care League. So, it wasn't really just a 'dog wedding'. If that were the case, I wouldn't have taken the time.

Also, it was fun because my dog loves to socialize with other dogs and this gave her the chance to do that. So it's kind of annoying to me when I hear people compare this to gay marriage.

This was all for fun, and benefit to a worthy cause. Gay marriage is for real and it's serious. And you just can't use the argument "If dogs can get married, then gay couples should be allowed to get married."
