Interestingly enough, I didn't see any "Joe the Plumber" types in McCain's audience the other night. Those folks looked fairly affluent to me!

In response to the above, though the McCain did use him to make it's point, it wasn't the McCain campaign who named him "Joe the Plumber."

Oh no, I see it was very finished. I see a pool table, a full-on HD surround sound system, a tan leather sectional, with the lounger chairs at either end and a fold down table in the middle, plus an authentic MGD neon sign in one corner, near the real oak bar.

The rest of the house has holes in the dry wall, a half-finished kitchen and cracked gutters, but that basement, oh my, that basement is SWEET.

I hate it when people generalize and pander to us by classifying us by our "generation" or lumping people into some bogus everyman like "Joe Sixpack." Joe the plumber was especially funny to me. His real first name is Samuel. My middle name is also Joseph, and my last name is very similar to his (4 syllables long, ends in -bacher"). But that's where the similarities end. If the McCain campaign had sought to paint me as an iconic everyman, I would have been "Joe the interactive marketer." Not nearly as cool.

Joe, Tito and Sarah sitting in a finished basement somewhere out in Real America.

@Albanyparkour: You think the basement will be finished? I picture it looking more like the Sopranos' basement: slab floor, a broken lamp on a workbench, and a couple of folding chairs dragged out from behind the water heater.

That's a sit-com pitch worth stealing.

Joe's comment about the dissertion was a quip, not a mistake. Maybe you should look up quip in the dictionary.

As for the sanctimonious liberal commenters on this thread, we shall see what "change" the Chosen One brings.

In fact, not only will Obama NOT cut taxes, as promised, but I predict Obama will propose the largest tax hike in US history, beating even Clinton's when Clinton reneged on HIS tax-cut pledge.

I'm about 90% sure that Joe the Plumber was a republican plant tactic-not sanctioned by the infinitely more intelligent John McCain in anyway-that thankfully didn't help them out.

I would put my percentage at 100%. This had all the hallmarks of a well-laid trap by the Republicans. First of all, the notion that this guy was somehow undecided is obviously ridiculous. Second, the question he asked Obama wasn't based in his own reality -- there was no business he was considering buying, it was all make-believe. Third, of course the press is going to look into this guy when the Republican nominee all but names the guy to his staff during the third debate, giving them more ammo against the "liberal media." Fourth, it was a nothing-to-lose risk in getting Obama to say something glib, which he did.

The reason it didn't work in the long run is because they squandered any gains by letting him keep talking.

10 bucks says this guy will get out of the plumbing business within the next 6 months to pursue a career as a conservative talk show host. Bet on it!

Tthen he'll finally have enough money to buy his boss's pumbing business. Maybe he'll even be able to afford to get a plumbing license, too!

I suppose that depends in part on whether Chicagoist dedicates further posts to his brief appearances on inconsequential talkshows featuring Joe Piscopo, doesn't it?

Even if Joe the Plummer had any credibility to begin with, I think he completely destoryed it with the whole "Obama would bring death to Israel" bit. Complete uninformed/biased nonsense. Pretty bad when even Fox News feels compeled to defend Obama and point out how off-base he is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eSJuWgZGYo

What a fucking moron...I'm about 90% sure that Joe the Plumber was a republican plant tactic-not sanctioned by the infinitely more intelligent John McCain in anyway-that thankfully didn't help them out. I'm not sure of the exact timeline but it seems pretty convenient that the f'ing C-word from Alaska starts talking about Joe Six Pack and then all of the sudden you've got this lying mope from Ohio named Joe pressing Obama on his tax plan. A tax plan which the Republicans constantly said he wasn't being upfront about.

In a way it's too bad that the Obama camp didn't need to resort of negative attack ads as much as McCain did because I would have really liked to see Palin ripped a new one and to have Joe the Plumber dressed down on a national stage. Hopefully we never hear from either of them again.
