Woman Nearly Gives Birth at Obamapalooza

Obamapalooza was a memorable experience for anyone who attended, but it's even more memorable for attendees Erin and Mawi Asgedom. The couple were watching President Elect Obama speak when Erin went into labor. She said, "Before we went, we realized that our contractions were about seven minutes apart. We decided to take the risk and witness something that was very historic." The couple left and walk nearly a mile to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where Erin was admitted and gave birth to a healthy Sawyer Tewolde Asgedom. Father Mawi, an immigrant from Ethiopia, said, "I feel like I've had the best 12 hours one can have. I got to witness a momentous moment in the history of democracy, Barack Obama, and then now I have my son here, who can be anyone he wants to be."

That kid is going to have one of the best birth stories ever.

o.k as some one who did not support Obama orginally, but then was won over in the end
after listening to his/our President's speech and McCain's speech- where he mentioned about Booker T Washington and T Roosevelt, I can't help but feel that the above is a bit trivial.

p.s on the day Obama became our president a 13 year old girl was buried up to her neck and then stoned to death by slamic reactionaries as punishment for being raped in Somali.

I wonder are we hopefull but in different ways

The Somalian girl suffered more than anyone ever should for something that none of us should ever have to go through, Spook.

But to call the birth of a child "trivial" is mean. Try telling that to the child's parents. Or to the child himself.

"Sorry, kid. Something really, really bad happened on the same day you were born, so it doesn't really matter that you came into this world."

That child could be your/mine/our president some day.

Hey, this is just one person's opinion, but my decision would not have been to risk the possibility of labor beginning in the middle of a park packed with 80,000 people. In that case TV would have been fine for me.

Spook,

I read about the Somali girl. Just tragic, but it happens in other countries too where they feel that rape is the victim's fault. There was video of a young girl in the middle east last year getting stoned to death for dating a boy that was not in her religion.
(Although, to be honest, we shouldn't feel so smug here because even in this free thinking country, we still have a 'blame the victim' mentality that greatly influences the way rape victims get treated. Although, true...we don't use stones.)

Also, have you been keeping up with Christopher Hitchens? He has come around to Obama's side too, and I like reading what he has to say about the issue, since he was not on the Obama-band wagon in the beginning either.

Hey

Jhop, after thinking about what you wrote, and in the spirit of Obama reconcilliation, I'm going to ask your permission first, before I call you a MORON.

And FYI buddy,
Yea it is freaking trivial. Yet another kid born into an over populated world of abused kids who don't have homes, love or a place to eat. Not that I'm being overly dramatic but please spare me your "American midwest values", I aint feeling it.

Now if said African couple had decided( because of Obama) to ADOPT one of the endless children from thier native war torn land where the average child is born into hell with an extended starving belly and face covered in flies, Id say that's "momentous" that's "Hope".

Feel me? Not a another kid. Dogs have "kids" too, so do snails and with less harm to the planet. Its no miracle and it just trivialises what could be a historic movement, unless thats all it means to you? Unless your mind works on a lake front goo goo liberal level( of too many Obama supporters) that says just because Obama's part African and they are African than it means something?

Ingrid

honestly,I don't know who Christopher Hitchens is. I mean in my defense perhaps I do? But my inability to remember names( including my own) could be at play. But I will google him because I certainly have not been following him and I am looking for real coverage of the Obama presidency besides all this fluff. Thanks for giving a Spook some thing he can use. Put one on my tab

P.S I wonder is he thinking about Mr. Putin's saber waving, scary!

Spook - Hitchens = the british journalist (though american citizen) who stirred the pot with the book God is Not Great.

Spook, call me a MORON (nice use of caps by the way) all you want. Poo-poo my midwestern values (growing up on the south side of Chicago is just like being reared in the cornfields of Iowa, dontchaknow). I said nothing regarding the race of the couple in reference to the birth of their child.

Just because you don't care for children or want them yourself doesn't take away from the fact that the people who had the kid experienced the best day of their lives. They had a kid that they wanted and will love and I don't see how that is trivial in the least. But, I am just a goo goo liberal. What do I know?

Although, come to think of it, maybe I can see how perhaps YOUR birth was a bit on the trivial side if all you think new people bring to the world is trouble and all you can do to argue a point is resort to name calling.

Check out his blog, Spook.

Hitchens is one of the biggest reasons I subscribe to Vanity Fair magazine too. He is a regular contributor. I disagree with him a lot (for instance, he despises the Clintons)...but I enjoy his honesty and originality.

Oh come on Spook. Mormons are such easy targets. Use a little imagination.
