Pelican Takes It Outside

Local alt-metal mavens Pelican just released a new video for their song "Lost In The Headlights" from their album City of Echoes. It's not the most inventive video of all time, but it certainly fits the band's aesthetic.

Metal has been back for a long time now tonyb. Get with the times man.

Uh yeah.

That atmospheric mess I just listened to isn't metal. Not by a long shot.

Well, no, it's not. But metal sounding music has been back.

Apparently this stuff is not "Real metal" a la slayer.

But I'm not all that into it so other people can have that argument.

Pelican's earlier material, namely their first EP and the subsequent full length Australasia, had a much more prominent doom metal influence than their most recent stuff, which is moving closer and closer towards post/atmospheric-rock. Their use of dense, layered sound-scapes has been the most consistent characteristic of their music. But trust me, those dudes know how to bring the metal. Just check out the other projects some of the members are involved in, i.e., Tusk, Lair of the Minotaur, etc. for further evidence.

...yeah, well, this song still sucked.

Soon Pelican and Explosions in the Sky will merge and become one.

WTF? A hard rock instrumental without a single hook or memorable riff! Guys - go buy some surf records...if no one's gonna sing, then the guitars have to! And lay off the damn Rush albums.

there are plenty of good hard rock instrumental or heavily instrumental bands, just so ya know. ever heard of Don Caballero or the Fucking Champs? Although I will say that the this song is not at all as interesting as the music those two bands make.

Sounds like Pelican just got kinda sick of playing long, slow songs all the time. A couple of cool riffs, but overall, yeah, not too memorable.

What mucky fingers said.

The quickest way to bore the hell out of me is excessive guitar noodling. My first concert was Joe Satriani at age 13 (my brother convinced our dad to take us) and I never went to another rock show till 21.
