We registered our car outside the city where my in-laws live. Problem solved.

My friend got a similar ticket (they ticketed him for not having a neighborhood permit when in fact he DID have one). When he contested the ticket by mail, the city didn't receive it in time so they still made him pay, plus a late fee. Bullshit.

@Tankboy

I was in much the same situation over the summer. I ended up saving the car (which ran perfectly fine the whole time but had the "Check Engine" light on so was there for unable to pass muster) for at least this winter.

The revenue dept/cops are ticketing first and asking questions later. They know that for every one person who damns the man to save empire records, there are several who just pony up the cash to avoid the trouble. Hell of a way to run a city.

I guess now they're scored to come apart if you try to peel them now right? Hopefully the thieves know that now...

Great more incentive for thieves to steal them. Several years back somebody smashed my side window just to steal the city sticker.

Yeah, they're ticketing all over the place ... methinks in hopes you won't go through the trouble of contesting them.

My sticker ran out but I can't get a new one until my car passes the new emissions test ... so after getting about $800 in tickets and an estimate for $1000 to fix the emissions, I've just stuck my car in a garage and bought a CTA Plus card.

I don't know - I got one of those tickets, despite my prominently displayed, recently affixed new city sticker. Every car on the block had a ticket, and all the ones I checked had a valid sticker.
