Asian grocery stores don't get any better than Super H Mart. This Korean grocery store in Niles makes us clap our hands in excitement. The massive store sells Asian/Korean ingredients, fresh produce and American staples as well as includes an eatery where you can get Korean, Chinese, or Japanese food.
Go get freshly made tofu (you can see it being made), watch them make puffed rice crackers or fresh sweet red bean pastries. If you feel like bibimbop, you can pick up a freshly prepared container of all the different toppings. All you have to do is make some rice and top with red pepper sauce (which you can find in its own aisle) or you can pick up bulgogi (or Kalbi) - marinated and just waiting for your grill. You can wander the aisles and pick up some new snacks.
If you haven't tried Pocky yet, that's just a shame. Oh...and have we mentioned that the prices (especially on produce) are fantastic? Captions under the pictures describe some of what you can find at Super H Mart.
Super H Mart is located at 801 Civic Center Drive in Niles, IL, just north of the city.
There is another location at 1295 E. Ogden Ave in Naperville, IL. (Thank you, lodasi!)

Friday Afternoon Diversion: Earth With Rings

I've heard the actual cooked food their is pretty good.
I think I shall make a weekend of it sometime soon.
I know this may exist outside of Cook County, but there is also a Super H Mart located in Naperville on Ogden Avenue.
Matty - I think the food is great. It's pretty authentic (the Korean stuff). WHEN ARE WE GOING? :)
Lodasi - Oo, I don't think I knew that. I'm going to look it up and add the address to the entry. Thank you!

My wife and I shop there every other weekend. It gets crowded but the prices are great and their produce is usually amazing.
I'm the worst Korean ever. I haven't been there yet (I know, I know). I just go to the Joongbushijang (Chicago Food Corp on Kimball).
I have a car, too. I guess I'm just a lazy ass. If you guys go to BBQ maybe you can convince me to come along too!
"WHEN ARE WE GOING? :)"
Whenever you feel like schooling me on some korean food (no really, my knowledge is embarrassing).
:D
So they didn't stop you taking photos? I was stopped one time.
Then there's the time I tried to buy a live eel. It's in the middle of this (see First Course):

Mike! That is an incredible meal you put together. Wow, that's very impressive!
Easy to kill-- just drop in salt water, it die real fast. That best way!
Haha! Nice.
They didn't stop me from taking pictures but I was also there at 8:15 in the morning, right when it opened so I could get some decent shots without too many people in the picture. Maybe they didn't say anything because I'm just a nice Asian girl. :)

Matty and The Meteorologist - Want me to e-mail you jokers on going? I have a friend who'd like to go eat there, too. We can meet up and grab some grub. :)
sonic - I admit that another reason I went so early in the morning is specifically because of those crowds. I wish there was one near me because the produce is fantastic.
yeah, I was going to ask you when you took those photos because the place is a zoo whenever we go.
Joongbushijang (Chicago Food Corp on Kimball) is also way cool and very inexpensive and right near my apartment. H Mart just blew me away, though.
I *love* Super H Mart... that place is awesome. I also love Mitsuwa Marketplace, up in Arlington Heights for some Japanese imported stuff (I still haven't found Peach Qoo anywhere...*sigh*).
Anyone know of other Asian "marts" in the Chicagoland area?
Dave! - I go to the one Sonic mentioned (Chicago Food Corp) on 3333 N. Kimball. I'm afraid that and some others in Chinatown are the only ones I ever go to. Now I want to check out Mitsuwa. Actually...now that I think of the 'burbs - there's one in Schaumburg that I hit every so often off of HIggins road next to Seoul restaurant.
mitsuwa is great!
Hmm...cheaper than Mitsuwa? I'll have to check that out!
Sorry, been pretty busy to respond. I think it'd be fun.
We gotta remember to wear something that's going into the wash the next day cause otherwise you'll go around smelling like burnt meat for a long time.
Feel free to email, if schedules work out then I'm game!
