We've received a couple of emails asking us, "Why do you love the snow so much since you always complain how cold it is?" Let's see:
- 1. Snow is pretty.
- 2. Snow is awesome.
- 3. Snow is tangible evidence of the cold; at least there is something to result from the cold other than our freezing ears and noses.
- 4. On a personal level, as I've mentioned before, I grew up in a part of the country where snow is seen as a sign of the apocalypse and is referred to as "the Devil's tears."
We hope that helps. There won't be snow today, unless you're in the snow belts of Michigan and Indiana, but it will be cold - early January cold. Highs will only climb to around 30 today and will drop into the upper teens tonight. Thankfully, the sun will be out and bright, doing a little bit of warming (we guess), and by the end of the weekend, temps will hover back up around normal levels. And as for the cold? We're not imagining it: Skilling says this November will have seen the most sub-40 degree days in 11 years.

Snow also covers up all the gunk and trash and ick of the city. Walking along the street early in the morning on a weekend in a city blanketed by fresh snow that muffles every sound... it's a beautiful thing.
Followed closely by the slush and dirty melting snow phase which is perhaps the most UNbeautiful thing.
Yeah, March is probably the worst month in Chicago...where all the 3 month old dirty snowpiles start melting, and exposing November's preserved garbage.
