Bulls Slide in Overtime
The Bulls ended their annual Circus Trip with a win over the 76ers in Philly on Sunday, so of course the 76ers returned the favor by edging the Bulls 103-95 in overtime in the Bulls return to the United Center last night. Derrick Rose led the Bulls with 24 points while Ben Gordon added 18. Andre Miller led the way for the 76ers scoring 9 of his 28 points in OT to lead Philly past the Bulls, prompting Drew Gooden to say, "He came out in attack mode all night." Just like Sunday, the 76ers had a double-digit lead that they wound up giving away to the Bulls, but this time, they managed to right the ship long enough to pull off the win. Now the Bulls head back out on the road to Milwaukee to face the Bucks tonight.
College Basketball
The Fighting Illini fell to the Clemson Tigers Tuesday night, by a score of 76-74. The Illini led by eight at the half, but slowly lost the handle as Clemson clamped down with a full-court press and shifted focus to production in the paint. A heroic, 28-point effort by Mike Davis and a hot hand from Demetri McCamey kept the Illini competitive till the end, but a botched final possession cost Illinois a chance at the game winning shot. This is the Illini's first loss of the season, and squares the ACC/ Big Ten Challenge at 3 wins apiece.
Seventh-ranked Notre Dame gunned down the South Dakota Coyotes, nailing a school-record 19 three's en route to a 102-76 victory. The Irish tallied nine treys in the time it took the Coyotes to score their first nine points. Kyle McAlarney sank seven from behind the arc, but Ryan Ayers trumped his performance with nine of his own. Ayers and McAlarney have filled the void left by the pneumonia-stricken Luke Harangody, combining for 113 points in Notre Dame's last two games.
Loyola eeked out a tight one against the William & Mary Tribe, winning 64-61. The Ramblers watched as their 12-point lead almost vanished in the final minutes, but the Tribe's David Schneider couldn't connect on a last-second attempt to force overtime. Loyola is back to .500 for the year and must now prep for a crosstown matchup against UIC on Saturday.
