For the record Department of Eagles existed before Daniel Rossen joined Grizzly Bear. In fact I'd go as far to say that Rossen influenced the GB sound rather than teh other way (see Horn of Plenty vs. Yellow House, pretty different sounds if you ask me as a completely biased and devoted DoE fan). Radio Free Chicago's (radiofreechicago.org) got their ish up by way of top tens. Pretty varied lists.

Read the intro since that explains my selection process and why you're not going to find Fleet Foxes on my list. That said just about every album mentioned in the comments here was pretty excellent too. I had a REALLY hard time winnowing down the list ... 2008 was a pretty terrific year for music.

As usual, most of my 2008 music purchases were not 2008 releases. The only new albums I bought was "Warpaint" by the Black Crowes and "Dig Out Your Soul" by Oasis. Both excellent, brawling brothers make for excellent songwriting. Yeah, I'm pretty out of it, music wise.

Department of Eagles has been getting the shaft from every major music site out there ... for no real reason other than its Grizzly Bear spinoff. Blitzen Trapper Ladyhawk (Shots) DJ/rupture (Uproot) Q-Tip The Knux Rhymefest (Jacko tribute) Ratatat Madlib (Wigflip) and absolutely nothing by Kanye (sucks) West.

Erykah Badu New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) The weirdest and most difficult to penetrate R&B album of the year you're right it is. i tried listening, but gave up. imo, it's the kind of album you want to listen to while you're... high.
