CTA Fares Increase

Parking meters aren't the only thing you'll need to shell out more for starting today. The CTA fare increase also goes into effect. The new fares for 2009 include:

  • Full Fare Transit Card Bus - $2.00

  • Full Fare Transit Card Rail - $2.25

  • Full Fare Chicago Card Bus - $2.00

  • Full Fare Chicago Card Rail - $2.25

  • Full Fare Cash (bus only) - $2.25

  • 7-Day CTA Pass5 - $23.00

  • Full Fare 30-Day Pass - $86.00

  • U-Pass 3 - 15% Increase

Wow, my 50 cent round trip contribution increase is going to solve a lot of financial woes.

It can add up with the large number of rides taken every day. Math is a better friend than sarcasm.

Not to forget that the 10% bonus for charging a Chicago Card is gone.

And get this - (in 2008 only with transit passes, now also with the Chicago Card)

Use a bus first, then a train, you pay $2.25.
Use a train first, then a bus, you pay $2.50.

So the same trip costs two different fares, depending on if you go from A to B, or B to A. WTF? Only with the CTA. Find me any city on the world where this applies as well.

Now, to save $0.25, I recommend to jump on a bus before you enter the L: swipe your Chicago card and immediately exit ($2), then take the train ($0.25) and the bus ($0.00). = $2.25 :-D

Sigh. Sick CTA brains.
