Starting this Wednesday and running through April Fool's Day, Hideout will be transformed into a soup line with a weekly dinner featuring three soups fashioned by Hideout staff, regulars, local chefs and maybe even a food writer/blogger or three.
The "Soup and Bread" concept was conceived and is being shepherded by former Reader staffer Martha Bayne, who holds down the early Wednesday shift at Hideout. Her initial call for cooking volunteers filled so quickly that she's now working on the February schedule (no soup will be served on 2/11). All soup served is free, but a hat will be passed among diners, with the collections going to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Bayne has also set up a blog so interested folks can keep updated on schedules and who's cooking in upcoming weeks.

this is SO cool. it reminds me of my lutheran church (ELCA) growing up. during lent, there was always a midweek mini church service, and beforehand, there were sandwiches and soup served. i guess looking back, it was a time to fellowship and stuff. i like soup.
