As a full-time artist I don't have the privilege of health insurance but with patience and perseverance, I was able to
secure a regular doctor at one of Stroger hospital's satellite clinics. The care is good and but the waits can be trying. I suffer from depression and some other ailments and get my prescriptions for free thru Provident hospital. With-out this basic care I probably would've checked out long ago.

I posted this article on the West Side Community Arts and Activisms Blog this a response I got.
Hello Alpha:
THis is really great! THanks. However, no one mentioned health insurance. Possibly because these people are young. The city can help by lobbying the state, federal and other political and social bodies regarding this subject.
regards,

I agree on the above sentiments. This kind of article takes A LOT of work to put together right, but is the exact kind of thing media outlets like Chicagoist should strive to put out there. Simian is right in that it's just the kind of conversation starter a community needs.

I have to applaud you on this one. Brilliant job, Lauri.

Ditto - great post. I especially enjoy the policy discussion - everyone had good thoughts as to how a local arts initiative might work (and might not).

More posts with policy ideas about a particular subject from non-wonks (then maybe a wonk response) would be a great conversation starter for the Chicago Internets.

I'm with Kilpatrick, tough times lead to better art. Artists will have to step up their game to stand out from the crowd. There may not be as many artists able to make their living off of their craft, but those who do make it will produce superior work.
