The vicious-dog ordinance in Toledo, Ohio states a limit of one pit bull per household and requires it to be kept on a leash and muzzled if taken off the owner's property.
I would like to amend that with a requirement that ownership of a dog like that automatically includes getting it neutered. Apparently, when they seize dogs there, they can be returned to the owner if they pay a fee. Also, while the dog is in custody it's neutered.
Many times the owner will walk away because a neutered dog has no value to them. So, if they would amend that law to include the neutering I feel that would help, because if you get caught with an intact animal, you not only have it taken away, you get a hefty fine. Money talks.
The Toledo law is a start, but if they go to pick up their impounded dog and realize they don't want it anymore because it's fixed, they'll just go out and buy another puppy. So, make the neutering a law and fine heavily AND remove the dog if the owners don't comply.
And what happens to a removed dog in this case?
You mean if the idiot owners don't wan them anymore? The same thing that happens in every situation like this.
The go up for adoption if they are suitable as pets, if not then they get euthanized...which in my opinion is better than living an abusive life as a fighting dog.
You are sadly mistaken if you think these dogs go up for adoption. There is no adoption or rescue option for any dog that resembles a pit bull (this includes boxer mix, lab mix, mastiff mix, among many others) If the owner does not claim the dog it is an automatic death sentence.
While Toledo is focusing all of their efforts on pit bull type dogs, bite incidents are steadily increasing and people are even being held hostage in their homes by packs of vicious non pit bull type dogs.
You should take a look at the animal ordinances of Calgary and an example of a model animal ordinance, and it is all done without singling out dogs based on what they look like
I am not sadly mistaken. I was at Petco this past fall where they had one of their adoption promotions and had a Pitbull there up for adoption. She was a gorgeous dog with a very sweet disposition.
And for your information, I have a good friend who adopted a pit/boxer mix 6 years ago and she's doing wonderfully. This dog was horribly abused and neglected and yet with love and care, she has prospered in her new home and is as gentle as a lamb.
Make no mistake about it, Pitbulls make wonderful pets if raised and treated properly.
If it weren't for all of the people who mishandle them, they would not have the reputation that they do today.
There may be some rescues that will euthanize a pitbull upon arrival, but most of them will test the dog. If they deem it acceptable for adoption then they will put it up for adoption. All rescues have the best of intentions.
If any dog shows any signs of aggression, then they will have to euthanize it. It's a sad fact of life, but better than being un-adoptable and living inside of a crate at some no-kill shelter for the rest of its life.
The pitbull had the most lovely table manners. It always waited until everyone had been served before going for the throat.
Really, talking about the "sweetness" of something bred for it's jaw strength is a bit "Well other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the theater?" don't you think?
Albany, I'm not going to discuss dogs with you anymore.
If only dog owners were made fully responsible for their dogs actions the number of vicious dogs would fall.
Treate a murderous pitbull as a murder weapon and charge the owner. That's my solution.
