The Friday Buffet

By Chuck Sudo in Food on Feb 6, 2009 6:40PM

  • This Weekend: It's the beginning of Carnival season, and Brasserie JO (59 W. Hubbard) is in the midst of their annual crepe festival, running through Sunday. They'll have a sweet and savory crepe menu in effect all weekend long. Additionally, all crepes will be served with paper fortunes.
  • Saturday: Just in time for Valentine's Day, chef Luis de Alba of Vong's Thai Kitchen (6 W. Hubbard) will teach enterprising home cooks how to make the perfect soufflé for their sweeties (or hook-ups). Attendees will be treated to mimosas to start the class at 11 a.m., a 3-course lunch, and leave with handy recipes and a goody bag. RSVP to 312-644-8664.
  • Saturday: The Cultural Center's ongoing "World Kitchen" series will focus on cooking with root vegetables, since they're in season. The course runs from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. (78 E. Washignton)
  • Monday: Eno at the Intercontinental Hotel (505 N. Michigan Ave.) is pairing wine with chocolate with their resident chocolate expert Shara Bauer. RSVP to the $25 course to 312-321-8738.
  • Tuesday: Saloon Steakhouse (200 E. Chestnut St., 312-280-5454) is hosting a craft beer dinner from 7-10 p.m. featuring selections from Capital Brewery, Shipyard, Abita, Flying Dog, Three Floyd's and Anchor. Cost is $70 per person.
  • Wednesday: Carnivale (702 W. Fulton Mkt., 312-850-5505) wine director Elizabeth Palmer will conduct a class on Spanish wines from 6-8 p.m. Reservations are recommended for this $25 per person course, which includes passed appetizers courtesy of chef Mark Mendez.
  • Thursday: In the oddest event entry the Buffet has seen in quite some time, Greenheart Shop (746 N. LaSalle St., www.greenheartshop.org) is hosting a chocolate and yoga progressive, starting at 5:45 p.m. at Yoga Now, Chicago's only all eco-constructed yoga studio, located next door. A 40-minute gentle yoga class will be offered. Fair trade wine and refreshments will be served. At 7pm, Cru Cacao will perform a raw vegan fair trade truffle making demonstration, with demonstrations to follow.
