Contest: Denis Leary at The Chicago Theatre

2009_02_leary.jpg We fell in love with Denis Leary's vitriol-fueled rants back during his cigarette smoke-spewing days as an MTV station ID man. Back then we considered him to be the result of comedic trend popularized by Dennis Miller ... both had that smart rapid fire delivery to their attacks, only where Miller pounded you over the head with his brains, Leary allowed his intelligence to sucker punch you from behind.

Leary has grown into a formidable actor -- most recently known for his powerful portrayal of a conflicted and morally ambiguous New York City firefighter in Rescue Me -- but he's never relinquished the cutting, angry, observational stand-up that launched his career.

He takes his latest show -- The Rescue Me Comedy Tour -- to The Chicago Theatre on April 11. And guess what? We have a pair of free tickets for one lucky Chicagoist reader! Enter for your chance to win after the jump.

Don't want to take the chance of missing the show at all? Tickets are available right now.

Contest ends Thursday, February 12, at 5 p.m. C.S.T.

The main difference today between DL and Dennis Miller is that DL is still funny. Man, what happened to Miller? He went all Fox News on us and became completely unfunny. Still, cannot forgive DL for ripping off Bill Hicks.

I've never fully understood the outrage over Leary vs Hicks. You said yourself that you still think DL is funny, but Hicks has been dead for 15 years, so that's 15 years that Leary has been funny without having Hicks to steal from correct? Personally, I think they were both great back in the early 90's and having heard lots of content from both, I think they had a couple similar bits buried in sets that were otherwise stylistically pretty different from one another.

I think Clark9201 below answers this quite well.

When asked why he quit smoking, Bill Hicks replied, "I just wanted to see if Denis would, too." RIP Bill!

Wasn't Denis Leary always an acerbic, ranting, smoking comedian? At least he always appeared that way, and I remember seeing him in the days of the brick-wall-background comedy club tv shows.
