Lollapalooza Predictions...

People keep asking us who we think will play this year's Lollapalooza so let's throw a few names out there as predictions. We would like to emphasize that these are predictions! We have no inside knowledge of any sort -- these thoughts are purely speculative.

2009_02_janes_addiction.jpg Anyway, we are almost positive Jane's Addiction will headline with their original line-up. They've already played a few small shows in L.A. and long-estranged original bassist Eric Avery looked to be having a blast, so it seems obvious that they will want to celebrate with one HUGE show. What would make more sense than for the four men who headlined thee original Lollapalooza to return to the festival's stage.

We also wouldn't be surprised if The Smashing Pumpkins headlined a night. Billy Corgan would take it as some sort of validation by the current musical climate and it would serve to deliver the band a massive crowd in their hometown.

And there's one band we're really hoping plays this year, and that's Blur with Graham Coxon in the line-up. Since they're playing those two Hyde Park (London, not Chicago) gigs (and another Manchester show that goes on sale tomorrow) we think it's a definite probability, and while we can't see the band wanting to do a longer tour in mid-size venues we can totally see them playing a few U.S. festival dates.

UPDATE: And how could we forget Pavement?

So those are just three predictions to get the conversation started ... who do you think is going to play? (And who would you LOVE to see play?)

lol @ that Janes Addiction picture. Oh Los Angeles...

Janes Addiction drummer? Or Kenny G in fashion casual...

I actually love that photo ... I think I still have that original promo shot lying around my place somewhere.

By "laying around" Tankboy means taped to wood paneled walls, and by "my place" he means his mom's basement....

What's funny is that when I was 17 and going through that Greg Brady "I want my own place" phase in Senior year I did move into the parents' basement, and while I don't recall taping that particular promo shot to the wall down there, I know Jane's Addiction was represented by either that or a poster.

And, for the record, my big "move" to the basement lased two days before I moved to my much warmer -- and less spooky -- original bedroom.

I think No Doubt are going to play.

Hm, you know, that WOULD make sense...

No Doubt is playing Bonaroo, I think there's a good chance they'll do Lollapalooza too now...

No way will the Pumpkins do Lolla. Billy Corgan's ego can't possibly fit, nor can he get past his petty differences with Chicago/Perry.

Now, Bruce Springsteen... [I so hope I'm kidding on that.]

Billy Joel and Elton John :)

*yawn*

Im sure once again P4k will pack the better bang for the buck.

Green Day would not surprise me.

maybe zepplin sans plant? Coldplay (i hope not)? Jane's Addiction is a good bet, especially since perry RUNS lollapalooza. TV on the Radio?

i'd love to see James play. their show at the Vic this year was so incredibly phenomenal, i'd definitely get a ticket for that. having broken my streak by not going to lolla last year, i don't feel as compelled to go anymore. this, after going every year since it's been in chicago for all three days each time. but if james showed up? no questions asked.

since we were all reunion-ing this past year, i'd be a sucker for a middle aged grrl's dream smattered throughout the lineup ... lemonheads, toad, liz phair, fountains of wayne, matthew sweet, teenage fanclub, etc.

if they could manage to get jellyfish or trip shakespeare back together, i'd be beside myself.

Jellyfish.. that'd be hard to resist. i'd rather hold out for a smaller gig though. one day of Pitchfork put me off festivals for well into the forseeable future.

blur blur blur blur!!! though i would rather see them in a more intimate setting where the crowd wants to hear more than the 'woo hoo' song.

Lolla isn't one for nostalgia acts so I doubt they'd be invited to perform.

Rage Against the Machine was a pretty big nostalgia act...

I hope you're being sarcastic...

Their sell by date expired in the '90s.

I'd like to see Fishbone for no other reason than I've been listening to them all morning

I think if you saw Fishhbone in its current incarnation you'd be terribly disappointed.

:( The only time I got to see Fishbone was at the 1993 Lollapalooza in St. Louis and they played all of 6 songs. Isn't it pretty much just Angelo and a bunch of kids these days?

Janes Addiction and Nine Inch Nails seem to be preparing for a co-headlining outdoor shed tour this summer, but I wouldn't doubt that a Lolla slot for Janes is on the books.

Soundgarden also supposedly was going to do Coachella, but backed out. Maybe Perry spoke with his old buddies and got them to agree to Lolla instead.

Coldplay seems like an option from their tour they have announced so far, but I doubt C3 would let them headline Alpine Valley and Lolla.

Can Smashing Pumpkins still headline an American festival? With the horrible reviews from the 20th anniversary tour and the 4 major shows they played last fall, does anyone even want to see them anymore?

No Doubt, Green Day, 311 and Blur would all make sense for headliners with more of a jam band playing on the opposite side of the field. Maybe even a reunited Blink 182.

Lolla has been courting Dave Matthews for quite some time and there isn't a Chicago area show on the books yet, so that would be a viable headliner. He would probably be the headliner that plays unopposed (a la Radiohead, RHCP, and Pearl Jam in previous years).

You make a lot of good points, and I had completely forgotten about Dave Matthews!

And maybe Pumpkins would play second to last instead of headlining?

The Pumpkins had mixed reviews on the last tour - New York Times and LA Times loved them, just to name a couple. Pitchfork screaming bloody murder about a tour they didn't even review doesn't a consensus make.

I do understand that the reviews were mixed for the Pumpkins tour, but the bulk that I read were very negative. Just because Pitchfork said it sucked, does not mean that it sucked. P-fork were far from the only ones who mentioned negative things about the tour.

I did see the 20th anniversary "warm up" tour and was not very impressed. I will admit to being a very passive fan of the band, but I found the bulk of the set to be self-indulgent. I don't really think Billy is trying to be a huge headlining festival/arena band. More power to him. They just won't draw enough to be a major headliner of a festival like Lolla.

I know Cornell is really pushing his solo career right now, but when he played Congress Theatre a year or so ago, they billed it as "Chris Cornell playing the hits of Soundgarden, Audioslave, and Temple of the Dog." He obviously has no qualms about cashing in on the name recognition of his past bands, so why not suspect he would reunite for some big bucks? If The Police can do it, anyone can.

At the same time Cornell has an album coming out of R&B inflected dance tunes.

I'm not kidding ... and it is not good.

But I doubt he would totally abandon it to promote a Soundgarden Lolla reunion slot.

Chris Cornell back with Soundgarden? My guess is not a chance in hell. Though I'd gladly suffer through a hot summer day with the hipsters to see Soundgarden again.

I thought TV On The Radio was the new Fishbone.

Oasis still sounded great in December...

I would love to see...

TV on the Radio
Wale
Janelle Monae
M.I.A. (after the baby)
Charles Hamilton
Santogold

When do they announce the lineup? I'm anxious....

STOP the press.

They have to get newly reunited group Blink 182.

Can we speculate on the Pitchfork Festival as well? I am sure they are trying to get a full fledged Neutral Milk Hotel headlining set. I'd love to see that. Maybe even do it Friday night with them playing "In the Airplane Over the Sea."

Considering that she did a few shows in the UK and Australia last year and may be releasing some of her unreleased stuff this year, I think Grace Jones might be the Yoko Ono for this summer's Pitchfork.

I would think Dear Science having gotten a great review from Pitchfork, TV On The Radio seems like nearly a sure thing. They didn't even do Lolla last year. It's about time they do a Chicago fest. I'd put money on this one.

The same could go for Animal Collective and the insane (9.6) rating of Merriweather Post Pavillion; the only caveat being them having played Pitchfork last year...

[I'm tempted to mention Beck here, but I back out]

Also maybe:
David Byrne & Brian Eno
Portishead
The Magnetic Fields
Elbow
M83
Friendly Fires
Crystal Antlers
Crystal Stilts
Crystal Castles
Ratatat
Love Is All
Ponytail
Marnie Stern
Hercules & Love Affair
Abe Vigoda
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
The Walkmen
Four Tet
Gang Gang Dance
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
-and my very unlikely dream...
Late Of The Pier

The big question I know that's all on our minds:
Would Pitchfork dare get Lil Wayne?

Whoa, L'il Wayne would be rather interesting!

Plus, it'd make Marcus pee his pants in excitement.

Who's the obligatory rap act? YOu know, kinda rough and "street" but not too street, i.e. only a smattering of the N word...
