Man Convicted of Beating Puppy

2009_2_puppy.jpg Randall Madison was sentenced to pay $1,400 in vetrinary bills and 10 days in jail, for beating his girlfriend's Jack Russel terrier so badly that it lost an eye. He was also placed on two years probation, ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation and serve 150 hours of community service by DuPage County Judge Jane Mitton, who said "this is a serious offense."

Madison apologized for injuring the dog, claiming that he fell on her while roughhousing with the animal. "I understand the way I handled her was inappropriate," Madison said. "No one feels worse than I do." A veterinarian testified that the dog's injuries were inconsistent with the defendant's claims. "She's doing good," said Toni Fedor of Villa Park, the dog's owner. "She's back to her old self. She's a very loving dog." Prosecutor John Blumenschein sought a 60 day sentence, although Madison faced up to one year in prison.
