Reel Chicago reports that Platinum Dunes, a horror film production company, is setting up shop at Chicago Studio City to begin filming for A Nightmare on Elm Street on April 27.
Sam Bayer will direct the film, with a script written by Arachnophobia scribe Wesley Strick. Platinum Dunes recently gave Friday the 13th a new lease on life; the movie had the highest opening night a horror movie has ever had (or so they say on the Platinum Dunes website). They also brought The Texas Chainsaw Massacre back to life.
But do we need another retelling of a story we all know by heart? And a version without Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger no less? Is a Chicago suburb the place for Elm Street? When will we get more original horror stories out of Hollywood? Can the director of music videos properly tell the story of our beloved Freddy? Only time will tell. A Nightmare on Elm Street is set for release in 2010.

It's a stupid horror movie. Of COURSE there will be a retelling. And far from "fail" it will win whatever weekend it is released (particularly if it's in the summer when the kids are out of school). Hell, "Paul Blart" ruled for TWO weekends in a row.
Hey, The original Nightmare on Elm Street should be in the top twenty scray horror movies of all time. I have no problem with a remake of a classic as long as its done creatively and they don't put Black people in just to kill them.
