More transparency needed in City Colleges chancellor selection, say students, faculty

As the district chancellor steps down, students, faculty and labor leaders say they want more input in the selection of the next City Colleges of Chicago chancellor.

Wayne Watson, the previous district chancellor, will step down this summer, saying he has accomplished his goals for the City Colleges after his eleven-year tenure. Watson is one of two finalists to take control of the Riverside Community College District in Southern California.

Faculty and students have expressed concerns of exclusion from the selection process. In accordance with district bylaws, the Board of Trustees are in charge of appointing the new chancellor but board Chairman Jim Tyree says it is Mayor Daley's decision to make, according to Chi-Town Daily News.

The search process can take a few months and no further details have been revealed. CPS Chief Education Officer Barbara Eason-Watkins' name has been thrown into the ring, but reports say she has no interest in the position.
