Will Bears Make Play for Cutler?

2009_03_cutler.jpg Any time a halfway competent starting quarterback hits the market, or rumors that one might be on the move pop up, local sports fans and sports media alike begin fantasizing about what that guy might look like in blue and orange. Only weeks ago, Kurt Warner was all the rage. This time, it's no different -- well, except that the guy in question is used to sporting blue and orange.

With the relationship between the Denver Broncos and Jay Cutler souring by the day, it's looking more and more likely he could land elsewhere before opening day. And nearly everybody in town thinks it should be with Da Bears. The Trib's David Haugh makes his pitch today, as does Greg Couch over at the Sun-Times. Both note that the Bears need an upgrade under center and that GM Jerry Angelo has said he's "fixated" on the position -- that's understandable given that Kyle Orton's currently backed up by Caleb Hanie and Brett Basanez.

Both examine the package of players and picks the Bears would need to offer to land Cutler -- if he's really on the market. Each suggests a combination of a star player and draft picks to pry the Pro Bowl quarterback away from Denver. Would Nathan Vasher and a first round pick be enough? Do they want Orton? Urlacher? Should the Bears offer anything and everything to land a Pro Bowl QB?

Steve Rosenbloom is perhaps the lone contrarian in town these days, suggesting that Cutler's recent pouting says a lot about his character. Of course, this is coming from the same Rosenbloom who was quick to call for a Cutler trade a couple weeks ago.

So do the Bears have any hopes of landing Jay Cutler and truly fixing the position that's been a glaring hole now since the days of Ditka? Or is this just the latest episode of fantasy island for Chicago sports fans? If the Broncos do intend to move their disgruntled quarterback and the Bears don't end up with him, Angelo will have a lot of explaining to do. But we suspect that Cutler and new Broncos coach Josh McDaniels can patch things up.

I love the Bears, but if I were a young star quarterback, they're about the last team I'd want to end up on. I also can't see Cutler leaving two of the best young WRs in the game for a team in perpetual WR hell.

Which one would you chose? Would you choose the teams that already has a hall of fame quarterback in their history, because you're so good you'll break all of their records? Denver had this quarterback named John Elway, do you think they forgot about him in Denver? . .
.

I think the choice for the Bears is an easy one - they never had an awesome quarterback, and if you're good enough you can be the one to achieve all the accolades.

Um, the Bears do have a Hall of Fame QB. Granted, he played in the 1940s.

That said, I don't think "a Hall of Fame QB played here recently" is a compelling reason to leave a team.

Cutler has a long career ahead of him and he's a very talented kid. They'll make nice and he'll stay in Denver.

You sort of indirectly proved my point. The bears had a hall of fame quarterback so long ago you cannot even recall his name. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it was, Sid Luckman.

And you think it's best for Cutler to stay in Denver and compete will Elway's records, than to come to Chicago instead, and make them?

interesting . . .

I believe in Orton and I liked how he played the first half of the season before he got hurt. If the bears pickup Cutler I would understand, and could roll with it. I don't see it happening though...

What's interesting is that you think Elway's legacy is so important to Cutler that he wants to leave Denver to escape it. I seriously doubt he gives a shit. The guy is having a pissing match with his new head coach. You're pulling this Elway thing out of thin air.

cutler would be a great selection for da bears...... orton is inconsistent, but makes a great backup in case the starter goes down, and as we all know the bears have no luck with any qb.... GO BEARS anyway.........

I can see the Elway thing. I agree it was kind of pulled out of thin air...but if the meetings are held behind closed doors, let the fanspeak begin!

Like the Bears, each year the defense will be compared to the 1985 Defense.

We all watch football, and we know what a starting QB is, and Orton ain't it. Orton does fit the mold of a back up QB. I would love to see the Bears pick up Cutler.

Go Bears!

This likely doesn't happen for a few reasons ... one, the Bears are "committed" to Kyle Orton. Two, Jerry Angelo isn't one to go after a player like this because it's too difficult a move. He would have to offer up defensive players as the Bronco defense is weak. He'd also have to offer Orton in the deal and more than likely a draft pick, maybe a 3rd rounder. It's a lot to give up on a team that already has numerous holes.

This also doesn't happen because it makes sense and Jerry Angelo doesn't like to do things that make sense. The Bears are a franchise that don't believe in taking risks. About as risky as they got on the FA market was picking up Mushin Muhammed (which was a bad move, more than it was a good one) ... and the team essentially got burned. JA can't pull the trigger and when he does he usually misfires.
