2009 Beard Nominees Announced

  • Paul Kahan for Outstanding Chef
  • Rich Melman for Outstanding Restaurateur
  • Mindy Segal for Outstanding Pastry Chef
  • Spiaggia for Outstanding Service
  • Koren Grieveson, Arun Sampanthavivat, Bruce Sherman in the Best Chef: Great Lakes category
  • Steve Dolinsky and Badriyyah Waheed for Television Food Segment, National and Local
  • Monica Eng and Phil Vettel for Newspaper Feature Writing About Restaurants and/or Chefs for "Big Night, Big Mystery: why Did Michael Carlson Vanish the Day After Serving Dinner to the Greatest Chefs in the World?"
  • Eng again for Newspaper Feature Writing Without Recipes ("Morality Bites")
  • The Tribune for Newspaper Food Section
  • Mike Sula in Multimedia Food Journalism for "The Whole Hog Project"
  • Grant Achatz's Alinea Cookbook in the "Cooking From A Professional Point of View" category.
  • The Publican for Outstanding Restaurant Design and Outstanding Restaurant Graphics
  • Bin 36 for Outstanding Wine Service

Alas, because of the way the Beard folks announced the nomination, I am forced to go around pointing out that the multi- in multimedia is that the Reader also entered my two Sky Full of Bacon podcasts following Sula and his hogs around, which can be viewed here: http://skyfullofbacon.com/blog/?p=189

Mike G, your videography in those more recent installments was as integral as Sula's reporting. It is a well-deserved nomination.

Does anyone else find it ironic that the guy on the Beard Foundation seal, in addition to having no beard, is also almost completely bald?
