Conceptual art of the Illinois Holocaust Museum, via the Museum's website The Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center has announced former President Bill Clinton will speak at the museum's public grand opening on Sunday, April 19. In a press release, Richard S. Hirschhaut, the museum's executive director, said, "President Clinton's participation in the dedication of this world-class institution truly sets the tone for what we want the museum to be. Not only does President Clinton's attendance underscore the urgency of our mission, but also the important role we must all play in combating intolerance and genocide throughout the world today." Clinton will join Governor Pat Quinn as well as several Holocaust survivors for the festivities. Located at 9603 Woods Drive in Skokie, tours of the museum will follow the festivities. More information on the grand opening can be found here.
The ceremony is open to the public, but tickets - which are free - are required. You can reserve tickets here until April 6. The museum is also hosting an inaugural gala next Thursday, April 2, featuring guest General Colin Powell. Tickets start at $350 and can be purchased here.
Once open, the museum's hours will be:
- Monday - Friday 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
- Thursday evening: 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM
- Saturday and Sunday: 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Admission will be $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, and $5 for children (ages 5 to 11).
As a web designer, it really bugs the shit out of me that design mills like Orbit Media get so much work, because it's obvious to my trained eye that they don't really consider the content when designing a site.
I went to the museum's site and my first question was "where is it?" Hmm... don't see it anywhere on the home page (though I do see a link to Orbit Media in the footer -- tacky, tacky), so maybe it's in About the Museum. Hmm... nope, don't see it there. Sometimes the address will be on the Contact page, so I'll look there. Ah, there it is, buried inside the site.
That is a problem! Address and basic contact information, especially for a public institution like a museum, should be on every single page! Sorry for hijacking like this, but design mills are the reason I don't make as much money as I should, despite knowing that I'd do a way better job at disseminating information.
From the museum's website:
"The Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center is a project of the Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois. This new world-class museum is dedicated to preserving the memories of those lost in the Holocaust and teaching current generations about the need to fight hatred, indifference and genocide in today’s world."
So I'm certain to find an interesting and non biased installation about the current situation between Israel and the Palestinians?
I'm not sure that "festivities" is the best word to describe the opening of a Holocaust museum.
It says "Celebrate the dream!" on the front page of the website. So I doubt they'd be offended by that.
Come join our grim misery?
