Runners Brave the Snow for the Shamrock Shuffle

Over 30,000 registered, but it was 13,714 brave souls who earned our respect downtown yesterday as they trudged through Mother Nature's early spring snow (a slushy, heavy one at that!) as part of the 30th Annual Shamrock Shuffle. The 8K (or 4.97 mile) race took place yesterday morning and, according to the race's website, here were the Top 5 finishers:

Top 5 Men

  1. Emmanuel Korir, 28, Lansing, MI, 24:18
  2. Ryan Meissen, 30, Mukwanago, WI, 24:23
  3. Jeff Jonaitis, 27, Tinley Park, IL, 24:29
  4. Tyler Sigl, 23, Seymour, WI, 24:30
  5. Chad Johnson, 32, Rochester Hills, MI, 24:30

Top 5 Women

  1. Deena Kastor, 36, Mammoth Lakes, CA, 27:15
  2. Tera Moody, 28, Boulder, CO, 28:03
  3. Casey Owens, 26, Des Moines, IA, 28:55
  4. Carol Jefferson, 23, Rochester Hills, MI, 28:57
  5. Catherine Beck, 23, Chicago, IL, 29:01

But, seriously, anyone who ran yesterday is a complete and total badass. It's not easy to roll out of bed so early in the morning and it's even harder to make yourself run 5 miles in weather as atrocious as yesterday's, so congrats to everyone who made it out there. For anyone interested in keeping up the running as spring turns a little warmer, be sure to check out the Soldier Field 10 Mile run. Myself and fellow Chicagoist writer Lizz Kannenberg will be participating, so come say hi.

Congrats to Emmanuel and Deena.

I've always wanted to be the best at exercising.

Somebody's been watching "Eastbound and Down."

Hats off to whoever ran this, I was volunteering down there in the morning and it was bloody miserable standing around in waterproof shoes. I can't imagine standing on the corals waiting in running shoes.

Thank YOU for volunteering. I ran it, and wished that I could thank every one of the volunteers standing in ankle-deep slush, doling out gatorade and cheering us on. Once you're running, you get pretty warm. Standing in one spot in that stuff is truly badass.

Waiting in the corrals did definitely suck, though... Everyone in the open corral started the race with numb toes.

Ah, springtime in Chicago!

Thanks for helping! My shoes were soaked well before the race started. I was very envious of the few smarter than I who had enveloped their feet with plastic bags.

Is this the same Deena Kastor that won the Olympic Bronze medal and is the US record holder for women in the marathon?

All of the people who looked out their window and didn't immediately go back to bed are better than I can hope to be.

Great Video! I'm so glad to be back in Chicago. It really is the people that make this city great!

I cannot endorse the Soldier Field 10 enough. Great weather and you run along the lake path south of the stadium so in the final stretch of the race, you get that absolutely SPECTACULAR view of the city. If it doesn't take your breath away, it'll inspire you to sprint home.

Yeahhhhhh but then you have to be able to leg it 10 miles! I don't know if that's possible for moi.

mukwanago is right by my hometown of wind lake, wi. is the shamrock that famous? i wouldn't know. i don't know if i run even *if* being chased.
