Last week veteran Chicago Police detective Joseph Frugoli was charged with DUI and reckless homicide after plowing an SUV into the back of a disabled car on the Dan Ryan killing two people. Frugoli, also charged with leaving the scene of an accident (IDOT workers saw him walking along the expressway), was freed on bail Sunday afternoon. Monday night protesters, friends and family of the two men killed in that crash held a silent protest outside Frugoli’s home. Protesters believe that Frugoli’s $500,000 bail was too low and that he’s receiving special treatment because he’s a Chicago cop.
The Chicago Police Department told Chicago Breaking News that thirteen police officers were arrested last year on drunken driving charges, five of which involved car crashes, two with injuries. So far this year, three officers have been arrested for driving under the influence. Consequences for the officers varied from a 20-45 day suspension without pay to being placed on leave. None were arrested or lost their jobs. A department source said this week that top brass may push for random alcohol testing of officers -- that would require changes in the contract with the Fraternal Order of Police, the union representing the rank and file. The recent discovery that two acquaintances of the victims of last week’s crash were also killed by an allegedly drunk off-duty Chicago cop has incited protesters further. They said they plan to return to the Frugoli home.

It is retarded to protest against a crime where there was no intent.
Of course he is getting special treatment, this is Chicago.
If you are protesting the "special treatement", why not do it at City Hall? Huh?
I found Jody Weis' statement to the press interesting. He said there were fewer officers arrested this year than last for DUI. Boy, that's a great metric. No chance at all that police are letting their own off. Nope, none at all.
As to why one would protest at the home of the apparent criminal? It isn't just the cop's home - Bridgeport is a cop enclave. They were getting the attention of the neighbors, many of whom are also cops. Franky, it sounds borderline-suicidal to do that. I'm pleasantly surprised that they weren't beaten. Let's see if in the next year, any of the protesting relatives are arrested for some bogus charge and then "accidentally" fall down a flight of stairs at the station while handcuffed.
Look at the John Ardelean case, where he killed two guys on Thanksgiving 2007. If you've driven along Damen near Wellington, it's hard to imagine how he got up to 60mph on those streets, but he did and now two people are dead. Then there's the fact that he didn't take a breathalizer test until 8 hours after the accident. Nice. End result - all charges have been dropped. Yep - 60mph on a side street, clearly drunk, two people dead - no charges.
I support the cops in controversies where "reverends" cry "abuse."
This is a completely different story. It is clear that the police are letting their own have an easy pass.
There's one thing missing from the proposed crackdown. There needs to be clear, firm penalties for the cops who are doing the letting-off. They pull over a drunk, find out he's a cop, and they let him go.
These clowns--the enablers--are going to still do it....unless they are punished.
