We caught Great Northern a while ago on one of their first national tours and were entranced with how they transformed their lush recorded arrangements into brutal brawling powerhouses onstage. The boy / girl interplay that carries along the most driving tracks turn from sultry back-and-forths and become molten exchanges by two intertwining and majestic forces. Hyperbole falls by the wayside as the honesty of the band's attack strips away the threat of exaggeration.
Just listen to the melodramatic build of "Houses" as it works itself into a lather before paying off with a majestically swooping release.
The group comes to Chicago next month in support of their second full-length, Remind Me Where the Light Is.
Great Northern, The Dears, and Eulogies play May 13 at Lakeshore Theatre, 3175 N Broadway, 8 p.m., $15

their studio work is great but pales in comparison to their live shows. a small space like lakeshore theatre is perfect for their incredible sound!
Agreed! Though last time I saw them I was totally spoiled since the show was with The Comas at SubT. Now THAT was hot!
Ditto! i saw that show, too!! do you know why they switched out the other players that were in the band?
Not a clue, actually. I know the drummer struck me as a touring player, but that was just on a gut level. If I interview 'em I'll ask!
Bravo. I love this band. Houses gave me chills the first time I heard it.
