If you liked Michael Frayn’s Copenhagen, (or even if you didn’t), check out Democracy, presented tonight as part of the “TimePieces” play reading series at TimeLine Theatre Company. Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Play, Democracy is the playwright’s follow-up to Copenhagen, which won the same award in 2000.

Set in 1966 Germany, Democracy fictionalizes the political dealings of West German chancellor Willy Brandt and his personal assistant, Günter Guillaume, who was eventually exposed as an East German spy. Filled with political intrigue, Democracy is a rich script even for those unfamiliar with the history behind it.

The reading includes lots of Chicago favorites - the cast features Lance Baker, Don Bender, Kurt Ehrmann, Tom Hickey, Bill McGough, Larry Newman Jr., David Parkes, Nigel Patterson, Roderick Peeples and Mark Richard, and is directed by Jonathan Berry.

Democracy, free, tonight only. TimeLine Theatre Company, 615 W. Wellington. Reservations recommended - 773-281-8463 or info@timelinetheatre.com
