While the Chicagoist intern isn't startled by storms, we know that's not true for all dogs, including some police dogs. This morning, the Chicago Police Department reported that one of its K9s, BEAR, went missing last night. According to an email sent out by the CPD, the dog's handler took it outside for a potty break when a crack of thunder - and we had plenty of that last night - scared the dog who scaled a five-foot fence and took off. The 74 lb black and tan shepherd was last seen near the 3800 block of West 109th Street.

Extra, Extra

I'm in the process right now of adopting a rescue dog who is afraid of thunderstorms.
I'll have to make sure he's not around 5 foot fences to scale during a thunderstorm!
Poor Bear. I hope they find him soon.
Gadzooks, he climbed a 5 foot fence?! I had a dog who would do that, mostly because he liked to wander. I hope they find him!
Yeah, I too had a dog who would do that. Briefly.
Emmy will hop into the tub during hard thunderstorms, if the bathroom door is left open. She's got good tornado training.
Wait, I've seen him! No, wait, that was the other 500 police dogs I've seen.
Still, I hope they find him. Police dogs are pretty damn cool. So are army dogs.
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but shouldn't a police dog not be the kind of dog that freaks out at thunder and lightning?
Slaphappy,
Dogs are afraid of thunderstorms. It probably helped them back in the wild to find safey and shelter. It's instinctual.
Poor thing, he's probably underneath someone's porch. I hope they find him. :(
i had a dog as a kid named Bear, not ALL CAPS though. slap a metal mask on his face and he could be DOOM's side kick
Um. yes. you made my day with this reference.
