AP Photo/Charles Rex Arbogast Wow. There's not much to really say after a game like this. The Minnesota Twins absolutely clobbered the White Sox 20-1. No, that's not a typo. 20-1. Taking a 1-0 lead into the second inning, the Twins broke it open with seven runs in the second, thanks in part to a three-run homer from Michael Cuddyer; ex-Sox Joe Crede also had a solo shot in the inning. After adding a run in the third and fourth, he Twins kept it up with six runs in the sixth, which included a Joe Mauer grand slam. But the Twins weren't done; for good measure, they added four more in the seventh. The White Sox managed a run in the bottom of the eighth on a Carlos Quentin single...but that was it.
Nick Blackburn got the win for Minnesota with seven shutout innings. As for the Sox, Bartolo Colon threw for two innings and gave up eight runs, yet only one was earned. Lance Broadway gave up six runs (five earned) in 3.1 innings, and Jimmy Gobble was credited with giving up six runs in an inning of work. Only D.J Carrasco went unblemished for the Sox, giving up no runs in 2.2 innings of work. So...how's Chicago looking to Jake Peavy now?
Great, now Peavy is really going to want to come here!
Three of Colon's runs were earned, not one.
MLB's box score only has 1 earned and I missed his innings. I'll check into it.
They changed the scoring -- earlier it was 3 ER, but now it is indeed 1 ER.
That said, I've watched thousands of baseball games and I still don't understand all of the circumstances behind why some runs are earned and others aren't when errors are made. I have no idea why all 7 second inning runs were unearned.
Looking at the play-by-play, I think he'll ultimately be pegged for 1 ER in the second inning, 2 ER total.
Colon pitched like shit.
HEYOOOO!!!!!
Hmmm, on second look, 0 ER in the second is the correct call.
The 19-run margin of defeat equals the worst ever for the Sox, equaling a 19-0 loss to the Angels in 2002.
And Peavy did officially reject the trade this evening -- I wonder if this game played any role in that!
Shitty day to be a Sox fan... *sigh*
only missed the sweep by a mere 20 runs.
