First Look: The Roof @ The Wit

Are rooftops the new patios? Between the C-View at the Affinia, the Vertigo Sky Lounge at the Dana, the Whiskey Sky at the W and the Terrace at the Conrad among others, hotel roofs are for more than just AC units and gravel these days.

Opening this week is The Roof at the new Wit Hotel at State & Lake. Featuring two outdoor patios, an indoor lounge with full bars, fireplaces, a small plates menu featuring fire-baked pizzas, and a 27th-story bird's eye view of State Street, we got an inside look and managed to keep the vertigo to a minimum in order to bring you a preview.

So...how are the drinks? Who's behind the menu? What's on tap? What pizza oven are they using? The real answer is: who cares? These places are all about the view, and everything else is just icing on the cake. You'll be paying hotel bar prices for the privilege of being at the top of the world, of course - but for one of the best views of State Street available, it's worth a trip.

I am sad to say that my high expectations for C-View were unfulfilled on my visit last week. The outdoor portion is much smaller than it looks on the website, and the views are not as good as you would imagine with the location. The service was also quite bad, with over 5 minute waits for drinks, given a small (less than 40 people) crowd. There was also a lot of lip-service elitism going on, with open seating that magically became reserved when the parties occupying them stood up.

Guess they're trying for the velvet rope thing, but there are too many other outdoor/roof bars in this city to put up with that, and pay $13/drink for the privilege.

Tomorrow or the next day. I think it depends on construction - they were still putting the finishing touches on the other day. The soft open is this week, and they're planning a big opening celebration for July.

I guess I dont understand all of the hype. I still think that NoMI in the Park Hyatt has the best outdoor space in the city.
The food, service and the decor is hands down my favorite!

You really have to see it to "get the hype" - it's a beautiful spot with views Northwest, Southwest AND Southeast (which is hard to tell from these pics). I was there Saturday and I'm amazed at how well the outside terrace looks finished considering these pics were posted only a week or so ago.

I think what makes it stand out a bit is that the decor is definitely stylish and trendy, but the staff and the seating make it feel comfortable, not "too cool for school."

I'm getting married at The Wit Hotel in August and after looking at what seems to be 100 venues - including the Terrace at the Conrad and C-View - on a search for something that would encapsulate the look, the atmosphere and a focus on food and libations we were hoping for (without needing to pretty a dull ballroom up with satin chair covers or expensive flowers that would go to waste), we walked up there and knew it was THE place. In 6 months, I'm sure it will be too popular for me to get a seat, but for my big day, I'm going to knock my guests' socks off.
