Afternoon Box Score: Cubs Down Bucs

After ending an eight-game skid, the Cubs now officially have a winning streak going (though they ended the winning streak in our hearts by demoting Bobby Scales, but we digress...) after upending Pittsburgh 5-2 this afternoon at Wrigley. The Cubs had an early 2-0 lead in the first when Milton Bradley tripled in Ryan Theriot and then scored on a Reed Johnson ground out. Johnson would also get the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer; the Cubs tacked on two more for insurance. Carlos Zambrano gave up two runs (one earned) and struck out six over 6.1 innings. A controversial play at the plate in the seventh led to the amusing pictures above as Zambrano argued with homeplate ump Mark Carlson after a wild pitch ended withZambrano attempting to tag Nyjer Morgan at home but Morgan was called safe by Carlson. Z lost it, was tossed, and after his tantrum, he took his anger out on an innocent Gatorade machine in the Cubs dugout. Once the dust settled, the Cubs bullpen took over and held the Bucs scoreless and Kevin Gregg got his first save in weeks while Carlos Marmol got the win in relief. Next up for the Cubs is a four-game set at Wrigley against the Los Angeles Dodgers, starting tomorrow night.

Obnoxious baby-man-child, quite a contrast from a class act like Scales.

I neglected to mention, to add to your comment, Z bumped the ump which is an automatic suspension. I forget how many games, though.

the ump instigated the contact - that is why Z threw the ump out of the game.

When did people start calling the Pittsburgh MLB team "the Bucs"? I guess I missed the memo.

Started years ago, courtesy of their radio play-by-play guy Bob Prince.

Ahh. well. I guess I should pay more attention to Pittsburgh radio broadcasts. :)

heh. good buddy of mine is a pittsburger so i hear about the buccos all the time.

What that link doesn't tell you is that Bucs is short for "Buccaneer". Get it? Pirates? Buccaneers? Unless you already figured that out, in which case, nevermind.

Zambrano today, you knew Milton Bradley was gonna go apeshit and start talking in third-person, you KNOW Uncle Lou will have a Looney Tunes episode before this season's over, heck, even Koyie Hill's temper tantrum in the first Brewers-Cubs game: just what's in the water cooler at that circus at Addison and Clark these days?!?

Marcus, there is no set number of games for bumping an ump, it's an automatic suspension to be determined by MLB. That said, I expect it to be 5 or 6 games.

As for 'Pittsburgher', a guy down the street from me has the license plate 'Y1nzer'.

And to Joel, Cubs players throwing tantrums isn't a surprise to me. There are fewer fanbases that are quicker to turn on players, and these days they're under an inordinate amount of pressure. It seems the players have taken on the attitudes of the fanbase.
