Whatcha Wearin'

2009_6_Elizabeth.jpg

In a thin whimsical dress and matching headband, Elizabeth tiptoes down Michigan Avenue as if in a scene from the ballet. Her silky thigh-length dress creates a soft, ever changing shape blowing in the light breeze. With understated details like the silk flower corsages on the dress and the headband, Elizabeth creates a youthful and elegant look for the summer.

Okay, I hate to be mean because I know the people featured here probably read these comments, but still ...

The outfit looks almost exactly like something my grandmother would have worn to bed circa 1982, assuming you subtract the hooker shoes and add a face mask and curlers. I hope to God she's not going to a job looking like that.

A different color might have helped, though I doubt it.

I agree, I hate this style. There are sooooooo many options available for dressing up and looking sexy for a night out...why someone would choose to go out looking like they're wearing a slip or a nightie is beyond my comprehension.

I mean, seriously...when I see someone dressed like this, to me it makes me think that they forgot to put the real dress on. It looks boring and lackluster. Also, I notice that women who wear clothes like this...all they do is hold the dress down, or try to keep it pulled down. That just looks so rididculous...it's like: wear something that you feel comfortable enough in that you don't have to keep adjusting, right?

i'm really, really, really hoping that you took this picture in the evening meaning she was on her way to an event or something. that dress/shirt is too short to not have something covering her legs.

I took this during the afternoon. Why do her legs need to be covered? It was hot and humid out that day.

it's not that her legs NEED to be covered, it's more her accidentally flashing her lady parts because her dress is so short (or at least appears to be in the picture).

i think she looks nice.

but i think chicagoist needs to find people beyond the downtown area. correct me if i'm wrong, but pretty much all of the "whatcha wearin" features were found in downtown, right?

Most are, there are a couple reasons why I shoot downtown:

1. There are more people walking downtown than in the neighborhoods (of course, it depends on the time of day, but for my shooting times, downtown works best)
2. I enjoy the diversity of downtown, whereas the neighborhoods contain a more specific ethnic group.
3. I work downtown (I take pictures during my lunch break and after work, I venture out to the neighborhoods on the weekends).
4. I know there are fashion conscious people living in the other areas, but, for a chance to capture a great look without waiting all day for it to happen, the downtown area provides the best chances of getting an interesting photograph.

Let me know what to think or if you have any suggestions of where to wander around.

well i guess your reasoning does make sense... not saying you have to venture out to different neighborhoods every single time, just once in a while would be cool. that is all. :)

pilsen might be pretty interesting.

She looks like a Roberto Clemente special ed student going to the prom. And what's up with the rolled up hemline on that dress?

From ashy to classy? Nope! Try again!

Damn, Spook, really? C'mon, we've all seen a hell of a lot worse. She just needs something to make it pop. Rigth now it's kinda ... meh. Even if it is "youthful and elegant".

Don't know what to think. It's cute, but seems like it's missing something, like it's an incomplete outfit. A necklace? Different shoes? Something on one or both of her wrists? A Sox hat?

And as for suggestions of where to wander, anywhere but Wicker Park. We've seen enough of that. Try Pilsen, Andersonville, Uptown, hell, I'll even take the Chads and Trixies of Wrigleyville. But no more hipster Wicker Park/Bucktown. We get it. You're all cool.

I'll tell you what it's missing: shape. All you have here are forty feet of legs, a couple of shoulders, and a flesh-colored mass of potato sack in between, all topped off with a flesh-colored headband a teenage mother from Gravelswitch, Kentucky would put on her baby.

Mind you, I'm trying not to be mean.

I notice that the Watcha Wearin' models are usually of good physical proportion.

Do fat people not have style?

I would say by definition, no. Except for Dom Deluise.

Fat people tend to have a more limited selection in clothing as more and more clothing brands move away from offering plus sizes.

Look at Beth Ditto. You can be fat, love yourself and have incredible style. Also, the singer Adele.
They don't let their size limit their style in the least.

I didn't know who Beth Ditto was until a Google, but she dresses like a sloppy clown. After her I was afraid to look up Adele.

I'm not saying fat people have no style, but it's certainly a lot harder to dress when only 10% of stores or so cater to you. Most of the overweight people I work with dress about 20 years older than they actually are because there's so little to choose from. Lots of Lane Bryant up in this mug.

I'll bet if Beth Ditto weighed 115 pounds you wouldn't call her a sloppy clown, even in the same exact outfits.
At least she isn't rockin' the Lane Bryant.
And look at Nigella Lawson...she is a big girl, but looks fantastic and dresses with awesome style.

Nigella Lawson isn't so much fat as gigantic chested.

Take a look at Nigella's hips. Thems big girl hips. Not that they're bad or anything. They work for me.

I remember the end of one episode when she does her usual thing of sneaking back into the kitchen at night to nibble on what she cooked. One time she was eating cold bacon rinds. She still managed to make it look good/sexy

I googled Beth Ditto and found this ... http://www.contactmusic.com/photos.nsf/main/beth_ditto_1900465

Now, I say this with the caveat that I'm a huge geek, but she looks exactly like Vir Cotto from Babylon 5.

Okay....I don't know who Vir Cotto is, but I think she looks really interesting in that picture. She doesn't follow any rules, which I think is cool.
The girl in this episode of whatcha wearing is someone who looks at fashion mags and lets them tell her what to wear and how to match...Garanimal Style.

@matty.....didn't say Nigella Lawson was fat, said she was a big girl...and I'm a huge fan of hers. I think she's stunning!

Vir Cotto ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wave_like_this.jpg

(One of these days, I'm going to have to teach myself html stuff).

Oh...Bluefairline...that is COLD!!!!!!

Perhaps, but I instantly thought of that scene. I could hear Beth Ditto reciting the lines. Beth Ditto could be a sci-fi alien from 1996 syndication TV.

Yes, maybe she could...but she'd still be rockin' her own individual style and it looks infinitely more exciting and interesting than the blah-blah nightgown girl above :)

Give me the blah blah Latina.

@Ingrid: Exhibit A: http://mediacation.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/beth-ditto.jpg I rest my case.

@BlueFairlane: I just laughed my ass off in an otherwise dead quiet office, as I'm prone to do at any mention of Babylon 5.

She looks too clean. I need some dirty bird, perhaps some sexy pumps to kick up the ojos.

Aside from that, you work it!

Pretty!! I think she kind of looks like a modern interpretation of a ballerina - but one strong gust, especially the ones caused by the skyscrapers downtown, and her cooter would be on display.

Basically wearing her underwear but she is certainly hawt!

Judging from the building she's fairly close to where I work--which would send her home w/o pay for the day if she showed up here in her nightgown.

At a certain point, all talk of fashion transforms the person being talked about into a mere object. It almost always happens with this feature.

Somebody quickly ask the jpeg about its feelings.

That's right. It's a robot wearing that dress. Sorry.

Might as well be, not much else you can gather from a photograph of anything. Hmmmm.... is she thinking of grabbing sushi or pining for lost love?........

A robot that looks like people? I think I saw this in a movie...

so..... whatcha wearin?

Correction, Maxwell.

Whatchu "Height Weight Proportionate People" Wearin?

You are obviously not talking to any fat people when you ask that.

Maxwell. Noooooooooo Irishmen is trying to goad you into posting pics of fat people so he can laugh at them and force some of us to laugh along with him. Don't do it!!

Do it, Maxwell!

Don't listen to Spook!

I want a picture of someone who is so fat that they are from both sides of the family!!

Maxwell's going to have to bring a list of thoughtful interview questions as well so we have more to comment on then the subject's appearance: What do you think of Sudanese support for the Janjaweed? Gay marriage? Civil right or affront to Christianity?

Wearing that dress to go out on the town is one thing, but I sure as heck hope she wasn't wearing it to work in an OFFICE.

I wish more people would dress like this in offices. I'm so sick of boring J. Crew sporting dorks.

It would be OK if she worked in a sex office.

You people are out of your damn minds. She looks great, her dress is fantastic, and those shoes are killer. A++ would view again.

she is quite fashionable and taking risks. we should applaud this. so many girls in this city wear such lame outfits with flip flops. horrid.
yes the dress is short, but not that short or tight. she's young, she's got great fashion sense and is trying out colors many girls here won't touch.

Thanks Jacisac,

I couldn't agree with you more!

She does not have great fashion sense. She has a bulky black purse hidden from the camera.

Please explain.
