Meter Rebellion Continues

By Marcus Gilmer in News on Jun 4, 2009 7:00PM

2009_05_29_reader.jpg The rebellion against the city's parking meters continues even as the Mayor, City Council, and private company running the meters continue to all tussle over the issue. Last night, a group of 50 parking meters stretching across the neighborhoods of Andersonville, Edgewater and Uptown were vandalized. From Chicago Breaking News:

The coin slots were obstructed with an adhesive thought to be glue or putty, Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said. The putty is removable "if they have something to scrape it with," Perez said.

The meters have also been sprayed with silver paint. Officials are on the scene.

Meanwhile, Mayor Daley is having to deal with the fall-out from this week's Inspector General's report on the meter privatization deal. Yesterday, Daley addressed the City Council, claiming, “My chief of staff detailed—detailed!—why we think this is a very, very responsible agreement. As mayor it is my job to be responsible...This agreement had the best professional people with regards to this agreement." The Reader's Mick Dumke has more.
